Got a letter from customs after I got items

    Hi,

I ordered stuff online and received them fine, and all was grand.
Then about a week or two later, I got a letter from FedEx saying I owed money on the customs charge. Now I've already received the items so this was a bit of a surprise to me. I've never been hit with customs before so not sure if this is how it works or not. I actually thought you had to pay customs BEFORE they "unlock" your items. So I've a couple of questions:

Is it possible this is a scam? (The details seem legit, down to my fathers name, who signed for it.)
Is it possible I can just not pay it or will I get hassle in future when I order other stuff abroad (I actually have another item due this week)?

It's in the small print. In order for your goods to clear customs you will need a customs broker. Unless this was selected by the shipper FedEx will use their own clearance department to clear your goods. The money you pay them has already been payed to customs by FedEx on your behalf as the clearance broker and they are now recouping it. They usually add on a small admin fee also to do this as the only payment either by yourself or from whom you ordered the goods from was for shipping. My advise is to pay the charge as firstly Fedex clearing the goods is a lot more cheaper then an outside broker and they will get legal on your ass if you don't and customs have their back.

It's the real deal, Fed-Ex would have paid the fees on your behalf so you could get the item on time.

Different to UPS who will ask for cash on delivery before they release the items.

Happened to me a few times a good few years back when ordering from the USA, and like you I got a letter a few days later which I paid over the phone.

They will recover their money from you one way or another as they've fulfilled their end of the contract.

I'd say you'd certainly have hassle with anything else that arrives via Fedex.
