Notifications Not Showing App Icon

Ok just switched back to Android from ios. One thing I'm missing is if I have a text is the little bubble over the message app icon displaying the the number of notifications. The same goes for email, Facebook, Twitter, etc

I read Android doesn't do this as it has the notification bar is that true?

Are there apps or launchers I can use to do this?

On my S4 my message app and Facebook have a digit to indicate notifications. My mail apps do not do this however.

Yes. A lot of custom launchers (Action, Nova) can do this along with several other methods. What you are looking for is 'notification badges'. The first google search of 'android notification badges' is How to Get iOS-Style "Badge App Icons" on Your ... Android Device.
