Car insurance Quote after claim

    Hi.

I recently had a car accident in which i rear ended somebody and they claimed off my insurance. The claim has been settled at €3200. I am insured with FBD and its up for renewal in August. I didn't have any step back and will probably lose my no claims discount so I began to shop around.

I have got a quote on line from Axa of €642 full comp which I was very surprised at. I disclosed all the details relating to my claim and my driving history in both my own name and as a name driver. I rang Axa to get a quote over the phone and they quoted me over €3000!! Is the online quote realistic?

I gave the exact same details over the phone as i did online. The lady on the phone said that they don't take named driver experience into account where as online I think they did. Should I just go with the online quote? I haven't yet received a renewal quote from FBD but I just wanted to shop around first!

If you've gotten a quote online whilst disclosing all details then go with that!
If you have not disclosed everything, then don't chance it

Provided you've disclosed everything, then go with the cheapest quote.

Curious as to why they are making such a fuss, is it to do with you not having the right add-on for windscreen replacement ?

everything is in order,i am an axa customer 6 years, this is the first windscreen claim since 2009,its a heated ( more expensive) windscreen, the windscreen replacement company said its a very very common issue ONLY WITH AXA and no other insurers

If you have a claim you will not get a cover note so you cannot change companies, no point in shopping around

Some insurance companies are a shower of crooks. A friend of mine had her car stolen while in an east of Ireland City klast year and when she reported it you would swear that she stole the car herself!! and also be very wary of some brokers who sell insurance on behalf of insurance companies as they may not sell you like for like and you will not find out until something goes wrong as was the case with my friend. She always had her no claims protected and now she is told that her no claims are gone !!!! after 9 years.......because her car was stolen and her broker (who she only changed to last year) had not protected her no claims and looks like she is stuck now on a higher premium for the next few years......it was a 'big broker' also which goes to show insurance people are not to be trusted.

Surprised to hear that, did you have any no claims bonus with axa, it used to be that you could not move for 3 years after a claim

this is the first time as long as I am with axa I have ever had trouble from them,i have a full protected no claims bonus, the fact its a heated and expensive windscreen might be the reason,as I said earlier in the thread they are becoming known for looking for the slightest reason now to pay out,i left them when my renewal was up and joined Allianz then at the last second axa undercut them which made me effectively stay, but I told them on the phone today this is definitely my last year with them after this debacle

Your claim seems to be for a windscreen which does not prevent movement from one company to another, so your original post is misleading

i had a third party claim against me back then for €3500 material damage the current one is a windscreen so my original post is not misleading

Surely having read her certificate of insurance and the accompanying policy documents she would have noticed that NCB Protection was not included? Sounds to me like a classic case of the consumer not actually checking what they purchased.

Once the claim is settled you can move insurance companies no problem. Learned this through experience unfortunately!

Yep. You can't move companies while a claim is pending. Once it's settled you're good to go.

Your friend moved to a new broker last year, so your friend was the only person in the transaction who had all the information about the previous policy. How is the broker to know what cover and extensions your friend had/wanted unless they mentioned it to them? Are you saying that your friend requested the cover, had it described in the policy document , but it wasn't actually placed with the insurer? If so, a solicitor would happily take up the case.

My theory (and I have seen it happen countless times) is that options on cover are given to a client and the cheapest options is invariably taken.

Its not up to the broker to include protection on the NCB.

She should request the call be listened to, if she wasnt offered it then she may have a case however in my experience most times the customers have been offered it but dont take it unless its fully explained exactly what it means.

Its also unusual that she has lost her bonus for a non fault claim, most insurers do not penalise for theft or fire claims.

Dangerous, the level of misinformation in this one.

What is this "cover note" you refer too. Do you mean the Certificate of NCB (or whatever it's called) that all motor insurance companies are legally obligated to issue well before a policy expires? What will happen is that your insurer will issue the cert as required by law but that cert may state there is an unsettled claim pending. As always, it's up to other insurers to decide if they are willing to accept you or not, and at what price. If you get 3 refusals or prohibitive quotes you can appeal.
