Fallen wood in forests

Is it legal to take fallen logs from the forest floor (e.g. Cratloe woods, etc.) - obviously not the stuff which has been sawn down, stacked up and waiting to be taken away but sometimes wandering the forest itself you see a log lying randomly on the forest floor which seems to be just left to rot.

I am thinking I could use some either for firewood or some project - what is the situation here?

Surely it belongs to the land owner regardless of whether the owner is private or public body?

    Not yours unless you ask.
It doesn't matter whether its fallen or not

Some little birds like to perch on things like that - stopbotheringthewildlife.com
