Hi i am a 28year old male with cystic acne around my mouth and jawline. I v been on roaccuntane when i was a teenager and that cleared it up for a few years but in the last two years it has come back. Its not too severe but does affect my confidence. Last year i was on antibiotics which worked but my stomach was getting affected so i could not stay on them. Basically my question is has anybody had laser treatment for active acne and did it work?

How about the roaccutane again? I think its the only thing that works. Never tried laser treatment so cant help you there.

to be honest its not severe enough to go on roaccuntane and deal with the side effects. Its basically around my mouth im affected usually a few deep inflammed cystic acne spots and i could go a few weeks without getting any. I also have dry skin but i dont like to mositurise as i hear it can clog pores.

a good moisturiser wont clog pores, and dry skin and dead skin cells will.

I find the effaclar range by la roche posay pretty good if you fancy giving that a go. Not sure how it would work with male skin and shaving etc...

I wouldnt be without this product. http://www.laroche-posay.com/products-treatments/Effaclar/EFFACLAR-DUO-Corrective-unclogging-care-anti-imperfections-anti-marks-p9667.aspx

Caroline Hirons saved my skin. Her website is carolinehirons.com. Read her acne cheat sheet and while you're there give a look at her other cheat sheets too.

And a good moisturiser won't clog your pores. If you don't moisturise after cleansing your skin will create excessive oils to compensate which will in turn create more spots. You need to moisturise!

I use Dermalogica moisturiser, it won't clog your pores. Cleanse, tone, moisturise in the morning and before you go to bed.

I'm also doing chemical peels and microneedling treatments but have only one session done on the microneedling so it's too early to give you any proper feedback yet. My skins not really too bad but it's just not very even and a few blemishes which I'm hoping it will help. You definitely need to be moisturising with any treatments as they really dry out your skin.

Drink 2L of water a day, look up egg white masks, and apple cider vinegar + baking soda. The wash and moisturiser on acne.org is excellent, but the treatment cream is extremely harsh.

No no no don't but baking soda anywhere near your face just don't do it.

Edit: If anyone wants to know why I can provide links and reading material on why baking soda should never go bear your face.

OK op first thing I'd advise is you go and see a doctor or a dermatologist if the acne is severe cystic acne is mainly cause by hormones so these will be the only people who'll really be able to fix it.

In the mean time if you don't want to go to a doctor I'd advise you start a basic routine. You need to be cleansing morning every with a gentle clenser and then use a moisturiser and high SPF suncream. At night you need to cleanse then use a chemical exfoliant and then moisturise. Lastly you can also use a spot treatment such as bp, salicylic acid or neem oil on your spots.

Edit: If you need me to further explain or clarify anything op or recommended products don't hesitate to ask. Also remember to spot test all new products before adding them to your routine.

Just took a look at her cheat sheet and although she means well and the majority of the information she gives is correct some things are not and I just want to point these out.

Firstly mineral oil is a good oil for ocm and is a great starter oil and is highly recommend.

Secondly there have not been enough studies that have been properly conducted that show a conclusive link between acne and diet.

OK I will do I'll start writing up a post now but it mightn't be up till some stage tomorrow as it will take awhile to get written up a simple as possible. I'll also talk about why you shouldn't use toothpaste and lemon juice on your face. Lastly I'll link some scientific studies as well in case anyone wants some further reading.

OK so let's talk about the damaging effects of baking soda, tooth paste and citrus fruit such as lemon on your skin. Although they are praised all over the internet and we've all seen them raved about on Facebook or pinterest or on many other sites for their magical effects on your skin and acne they do nothing but damage your skin.

Most people know what the PH scale is from science in school basically a scale from 1-14 that measures how acidic and basic substances are. 1-7 are acidic and 7-14 are basic. With 7 being neutral your blood for example is usually neutral. Your skin has a pH of 4.5-5 and effective chemical exfoliants have a pH of 3-4. However baking soda has a pH of 9!!! white vinegar 2.4!!! and toothpaste 8-10!!! These are extremely damaging to your skins acid mantle. Which is a thin protective layer on your skin that acids of a barrier to bacteria and viruses.

Now onto lemon juice. Lemon juice usually has a pH of wait for it 2 this is compared to the gastric acid in your stomach which breaks down food and has a pH of 1. So not only is lemon juice and other citrus juice extremely damaging to your acid mantle they can also cause a condition called phytophotodermatitis this can lead to skin damage scarring and hyper pigmentation. This happens when the compounds in citrus juice react with the sun. An extreme example can be seen here http://vitiligosupport.org/newsletters/fall2012/images/phototoxic.jpg

So remember never put baking soda, lemon juice or any citrus juice or toothpaste near your face. And if a product burns when you use it stop using it even though you may think that if it burns it means its working well it doesn't it means its damaging your skin.

In answer to the first post, my best friend had cystic acne and got laser treatment. Her skin cleared over about 2 weeks, and she had repeat treatment every 3 months. Her skin was completely clear during the treatment and she wasn't taking any further medication or special measures. When she was late getting her laser a couple of times, the acne started to return. Her acne was very severe before the lasers.

So, only one example for you but in that case it worked incredibly well. It also basically erased the leftover red marks and minor scars she had.
