Guys i need to pick your brains (mmm brains...)

Got car back there today after getting timing belt kit inc water pump front brakes discs+pads track rod end full fluid and filter change and collected with work van.
However when i went back with auld lad to pick up work van to drop it to bosses house the volvo wouldn't start atall and had to leave it at mechanics again.
Symptoms are slight hesitation of power between gearchanges on initial power car takes 2-3 times to start and now it just refuses to start.
I think it's the maf or a fuel air ratio problem. Any thoughts ???

    Engine light ?

who did the work on the car ?

Volvo engines are amazingly sensitive when it comes to servicing and timing belt and water pumps etc.

It was like this nefore too.

-Never started first time (well once or twice)

-Slight hesitation going from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd.

-Second time car just refused to start in a week.

Internet says everything from Maf to Ignition switch to injectors to fuel pressure sensor :(

    thats fair enough so..

if not then they are wasting their and your time.

No idea will have to ask, is no error message showing up on the readout on cars dash anyway.

How much are those diagnostic handsets to buy ?

it might not be showing up on the DIM because theres about 8 different Control modules etc in that car.

the vida dice set up is pricey enough for a knockoff one that does the job well.

about 100 delivered from online .. they give the diagnostic cable and software and the rest works off your laptop

im not plugged into a car at the moment but i loaded up an s60 manually into Vida to show you the different modules. in the first attacthment there would be close to your car but when connected you get this.

(second attacthement is from an S40 1.6D that i did.)

but vida can bring up every problem with the car that the car wont tell you... even if a heated seat isint working correctly. or a slight misfire etc. that wont bring on a engine light.

Symptoms sound very similar to what was happening on the wife's V50 before we got rid. Interrmittant (sp?) hard start, hesitation under acceleration. Never failed to start eventually though, and would have the EML on every other day - seemed town driving would flash the EML, then long distance would clear it.

Cr@pped itself firstly when the alternator gave up the ghost (similar symptoms before that), then I reckon the wrong alternator was put in that caused the ongoing issues.

Well will report back fuel pressure sensor and ignition switch and checking the three wires to the starter might be a simple fix or a good clean out of the maf.

Just spent a decent amount of munny on servicing and tyres so hope its nothing too big

Try following some logic here. Take out a spark plug, is it wet? Then it's getting fuel but there's no spark. If it's dry there's no fuel being delivered. Turn engine over on the starter briefly with a plug placed on the engine connected to its coil and see is there a spark.

Its just had five new spark plugs had same intermittent issue before new plugs went in.

When it's not starting is there no spark or no fuel or both? That's what I'm trying to establish.

Fuel is reaching where the plugs are and plugs are new so I'm guessing there is a spark.

Going by the intermittent nature of it starting/not starting I'm thinking its something electrical tbh.

Anyway its left with my mechanic we will see what he reckons.

I don't think you really understand how an engine works, not much point in people here trying to help.

    Thanks again.

If they are still struggling with it, try get it back from them for the meet and I can bring vida/dice and see whata going on.

im sure with diagnostics and a rake of boardsies and a saab boot of tools we can get something going !

Sound the hesitation I'm not to bothered about its mainly the unreliable starting and I doubt they are directly related just two issues caused by different things.

Will see how it is but don't fancy getting stranded in the big shmoke if its not rectified by then. My bet is on a loose or corroded wire to the starter or an ignition switch. Hesitation can be figured out later.

    Youd be suprised with volvo.

sure my climate control was faulty but worked perfect. It meant my parking sensors wouldnt work sometimes

Have you tried the crankshaft position sensor?

It's so simple. Set up an account, top it up, enter their address and they deliver it to a petrol station of your choice. They'll text you when it's there. Well worth doing.

SG have you looked at the coil packs yet?

    Or mis-set timing?

Was the VVT (variable valve timing) pulley changed with the belt?

I also have the Vida/dice diagnostics if KSL cant help.

Yea that's on the list with vacuum hoses/breather pipes and fuel pressure regulator

No vvt pulley wasn't changed unless it came with the kit (was more expensive of the two listed on micksgarage for the year/model)

Does Vida/dice work on a laptop with vista or do you need xp ?

its not likely to have been included, they are quite expensive :pac:

what spark plugs were used? strange one I know, but the older 2.0t and t4s have a dislike of non OEM plugs.

    Edit:Cleaned the ICV too?

Re Vida I have mine (2011a) running on an XP virtual machine(VMware) inside Win 7.
Its the easiest way to set it up imho.

if it's turning over it's not a starter issue or ignition switch.

I had a similiar issue on my alfa a couple of years ago, slow to start, sluggish in low gears, and sometimes cut out completely.

    It was the crank sensor.

    Idle control valve.

Vida can be tricky to find your way around. make sure to look for any scroll bars in the screen that may be hiding options.

FYI you may need to enter the vin and populate the engine/gearbox fields manually, need any help just shout :)
