Rear Hub Servicing Question

    Hiya

I've a mountain bike and was doing a service on the rear hub.

Just wondering should there be much of a difference between ease of spinning the freehub mechanism (still attached to the hub shell and in the wheel) with the axle out and with it tightened in place?

My mechanism did seem to spin a bit easier with the axle out.

Also I've a Velomann toolkit and it has this component in it

Should that hex shape component come off the Allen key?

I think that's a 10mm Allen Key but 'cos of the component on it I couldn't get it deep enough into the freehub mechanism to take it off.

Of course I could be completely wrong on what this is though as I bought the tool kit so to be able to service my bike but I don't know how to service my bike without youtube's help :D

Just thought I'd bump this as that tool is really confusing me!

The adaptor bit, if it is an adaptor, does not budge when I use my hands to try and push it off.

On my kit that comes off. But on yours it might be part of the tool. Together they should fit into another tool(s) that are used to remove a rear cassette or can be used on pedals (just the bare ends of the wrench)

It's unlikely that it is the 10mm hex that you require. Mine wasn't big enough to use on my free hub.

[edit] this is my tool kit. You can see it separate. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ie/en/x-tools-bike-tool-kit-18-piece/rp-prod40997 [edit]

    Ok thanks.

It doesn't look like one tool which is what has me confused. It looks like two but doesn't come off easily.

Just serviced my free hub on my roadie recently. I needed an 11mm hex wrench which loosens a nut inside the wheel hub. Remove the small rubber seal at the back of the free hub and Washed the free hub in petrol to remove grit and old lube. Re lubed amd refitted and it runs like butter now.

Was there much difference with the ease to spin the freehub mechanism when you had the axle on and off?

Be care when refitting the cones. They generally are handed..ie, left cone can only go on the left side etc. If these are not on the correct side them you may have trouble setting the correct tightness and the wheel will not spin smooth at all.

There should be no difference whether the axle is on or off. If the free hub is rough with the axle on. Follow my steps above and you'll have a smooth freehub with axle on and off..
