What is he hoping to achieve? Caveat emptor. If you don't know what you're at and / or not willing to take a risk, you shouldn't be buying cheap second hand cars from private sellers. His problem 100%.

I'd imagine he's trying to go at it from a false advertising point of view.
    Doubt he has much chance.

Totally agree, but I fear some people don't know the basic consumer laws we have so believes he is entitled to a claim.
I'm not fully up to date on them myself to be fair but I know the basics.
I'd imagine he is looking for "witnesses" that will back him up that the car was a "pig" and therefore bring the case to court..
I'd like to see the outcome but he's pissing in the wind afaik.

He'll have to prove that the seller knew and failed to disclose the issues. Difficult but not impossible.

Any ideas how he could prove that? Genuinely curious

Somebody else that viewed it and spotted the problems, making the seller aware of them?

Worth a shot I suppose.. but as you say, ultimately it's the buyer's problem.

Almost correct. It is not up to the seller to disclose any issues. It is up to the buyer to find out and / or ask about them. If the seller tells a lie and the buyer can prove the seller told him a lie, then the buyer has a case. Indeed very difficult but not impossible.

The only protection you have buying private is if it's dangerous and even that is hard to get results as the people selling these heaps know that in the end it'll take someone a lot of time and money to get a refund if they are lucky.

11,800 miles on a 11 year old Passat? That should have set off alarm bells straight away.

He also has it over a month, so it can't have been that bad when he bought it?

    I think it's safe to assume that's a typo - 118,000.

Even 118,000 miles would have me a bit suspicious. It'll be an expensive lesson for him I'm afraid

Wonder how much he actually paid for it.

    He can only blame himself.
Should've paid €50 for a mechanic to check it out.

Not so much a typo as people just not having the competence to handle a number over 1,000 I would think.

Its pretty much a waste of €3 or whatever Donedeal are charging to place an ad these times. He bought a car privately presumably was not qualified to check its mechanicals out himself or his did not get an engineer/ mechanic to inspect it. It turned out to be a lemon. These things happen. Buyer beware, he got stung like a lot of have at one stage or another. He should just fix it or sell it for parts/ to make bean tins for China and move on...

It actual looks a pretty decent car.
Doesn't seem to have the arse ran out of it.
Should take it as a lesson learned. Get it fixed and drive on.

To me it looks like a dog. I wouldn't come near it to be fairly honest.

You only don't do that the first time.

Thankfully for myself it was a 'cheap' (€2000) lesson learned.

I bought a car in a similar situation. I made contact with done deal as the cars ems was disabled, which is engine tampering.

In the end i bought a 06 car for 1800, i spent 1100 on fixing it and sold it for 4000 with a rebuilt engine.

Sometimes you have to wade through the crap to get to the Rose bush
