Really don't wanna look for a place to rent at the last minute!

Depends on your circumstances. You will write a personal statement about why you would be a good resident in Halls, this will need to be a good standard. They will take into account how far away you live from the college. If you're from Kerry or Donegal, you will have more chance of getting a place than someone from Kildare or Meath.

Although, having said that, I wonder how much they really take location into account: I know plenty of people from 'commuter' counties (and even some from Dublin) that got Halls, while people from further away (thinking of friends from Tyrone & Mayo specifically) who didn't get places... So really try make the statement as good as possible, and keep your fingers crossed!

Both myself and the girl I lived with this year didn't get halls and so we found each other on a Facebook group and got a flat together, I'm from Cork and she is from Galway, so no they do not take distance into account, when the list of people who got halls came out, when I read the conditions with the list, my understanding was that it was done randomly and the personal statements were read afterwards. You're not guaranteed a place in halls. This year there was a Facebook group set up for people who didn't get it, and then people got together and tried to rent privately or else your other choice is to go into digs and wait for a few months until some places in halls open up, as a few more places come available after a while, when people drop out etc
