Golf ball preference?

    Hi,

Does anyone have a major preference when it comes to golf balls?

On Monday I ordered a dozen Taylor Made "Lethal" balls with Halfpenny for €35. I got a call the next day to say they are sold out and the ball has been discontinued and replaced with the TM "Tour preferred" and "Tour Preffered X". He sent me the TPx for no extra cost.

Anyone used them? I like a ball to be soft for putting and chipping but I always worry I'm missing out on other aspects.

Is the common default "Just buy ProV1's"?

Whatever premium balls from last year are on run-out for less than €30 a box. For me the premium balls from all the brands perform near enough to identical and last years model performs just like this years.

Im using the AD333 Tour version this summer (play off 12). I got a couple of boxes with my 2s club and well worth it. There a very good ball, alot straighter off the tee and great check around the greens. They are about 35e a box too

I've been using the Callaway super soft lately and find them great.

Other than that I'd use the srixon z star which appear for €20 a dozen every now and then in shops as well as on sports direct

Ive started using the Titleist Velocity balls and have found an improvement in my distance in using them . Distance was something I really needed so im happy with them for now.

Probably over 2 years since I bought a ball as generally find more than I loose. During the main playing season I'll play any soft ball such as the premium offerings from the main manufacturers. Don't really notice much if any difference between them but the ProVs are by far the most popular based on the better ones I find.

During the off season I particular like the Titleist NXT Tours and wouldn't hesitate to play these all year round but do find the softer offerings yielding better spin and feel around the firmer greens in summer.

I've been using these for the last 6 months http://www.americangolf.co.uk/balls-accessories/golf-balls/wilson-staff-dx2-soft-12-ball-pack-247550.html

Great for distance and a really soft feel that I find easy to control around the green.

Were recommended to me as the closest thing to Titleist NXT Tour balls at half the price too :)

As a high handicapper I can lose a fair few balls so generally don't but the expensive ones. For the last 18 months I have just been using the Dunlop DDH ti Golf balls from Sports World in Heatons. Brand new you normally get them for €0.50 per ball which is cheaper than any lake ball. What I really like is that it is the same ball all the time so taking any differences between brands out of the equation.

If I was to pay the money, I really liked the Srixon Soft Feel golf balls for wedge and in shots, they also felt lovely off the driver "soft"

    Orange ones.
Very underrated and annoyingly hard to get these days. Ahhh, the eighties.
(And no yellow is not even near. They are worse than the white ones).

I love the tm lethals. I've bought them off mcguirks delivered for €59.50 per two dozen. Best ball I've ever used, second best the 2012 nike 20xi x

How do they compare to the AD333?

Primarily use the AD333. I don't get much spin on greens ( technique more than anything) but find them much straighter than the softer balls on the market off the tee.

Bought 2 boxes of Callaway Super Soft balls when I was in Orlando recently on the recommendation of Golfsmiths. They are new on the market and not sure they can be bought in Ireland. Lovely for pitching.chipping and great on fast greens. Lovely soft feeling around the greens with them.

They are the gap between ad333 and z-stars and been marketed for amateur golfers who wouldnt have the swing speeds of the pros.

They are brilliant around the green and would definetly recommend them. I have used pretty much every premium ball z-stars, prov, 20xi, penta, B330 etc but these seem to suit my game the best.

Bridgestone E6, I'm a 15 handicapper and I love the ball. Does what it says on the tin...slices/hooks are reduced which helps keep the ball in play. Cant match the tour balls for feel around the green but they do have a soft feel.

You better off getting yourself ProV1's. They are the best ball out there for chipping and putting!!!

I am quite surprised to hear people say that they get less of a slice/hook off a ball?! Is this the case really that a ball can help with a slice?

Meh, I've no doubt that some balls spin less than others and so in theory should hook or slice less, but I remain to be convinced that there's any real world advantage for the average Joe. I guess there could be a placebo though. If you think your ball won't slice as much, you might swing a little more freely and hit a straighter shot.

I find preference depends on the course and the type of play.

I find dry ground and summer time that Nikes RZN are quite good, very nice roll on fast greens

In the winter I normally play with a lesser known ball, Green Lamb.

I find with the Bridgestone E6 that bad shots are not as wayward as with a tour ball which would have higher spin. I said I'd give them a go about a month ago and I find them great so I'm sticking with them.

    I wouldn't agree with that tbh. The ball you use should be based on a few things including;
    • Handicap & ability
    • What you want from the ball
    • How much you can afford to spend

There's little point (unless you can afford the expense) of a higher handicap golfer using Pro V's, especially if you are prone to losing balls regularly. Also, the ball you choose when putting or chipping can be a personal thing. Some people play shots that require the ball to stop quickly, whereas others prefer to 'bump & run' and don't need the extra spin but would prefer extra distance.

Personally I can't tell the difference between a Pro-v and the likes of the Z-Star, Penta, etc when putting or chipping - they all feel good off the face of the putter and stop quickly too, and when it comes to buying them I'm happy enough going for whichever premium ball is on special offer.

I noticed that aswell. Particularly when I gunned an 8 iron 165 yards over the back on the 4th into a hedge

    +1

I used to use Pro-v1s all the time. For the last couple of years I've been using whatever premium balls are the best deal at time of purchase. Once I'm not chopping and changing from ball to ball, I find very little difference between them. Have used Prov1s, Z-stars, FG-Tours and TM Pentas in 4 different stretches, happy with all of them

Pro V 1's - usually found ones. Occasionally buy used Pro V 1's or NXT tour. Have never bought a new Pro V, they're stupidly expensive. Used balls are plenty good enough for me :-)

Prov1x would be my ball of choice. Find it relatively straight off the tee while still having a bit of feel for the tasty stuff around the greens...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,140 ✭✭✭✭TheDoc

Been using Srixon AD333's as my main ball. I strayed away trying Prov's for a while and ended up coming back. I think they've a lovely feel and are so economical in terms of value. A guy from adverts does a good batch that are in perfect nick for a good price.

Although found a TM Penta in perfect nick and using it last two rounds, pretty impressive. Local pro does five for €10 so might give them a lash for a while.

Slightly related but how many balls on average do you guys buy a year (bought and won combined since any prizes could be returned for something else of similar value)?

I got a bag of 30 Srixon AD333's around April last year, have about 9 left.

I'd say I probably go through about 2 dozen, maybe three per year. Can be hard to say precisely. I'd maybe buy of a new brand or type of ball to try out, which wouldnt be necessarily because I need them.

On this actual topic, surprised we havnt a thread whereby people can sell recovered and refurbished golf balls. So many sellers around the Dublin area.

Be cool if maybe there was some guys posting here that do this, to know who they are and them be allowed flaunt their wares.

Some good sellers on adverts and as someone who used to somewhat frown upon using refurb balls being uneasy at possible defects, was totally converted from a purchase made last year where it was like I got 30 balls straight out of a shop.

That would be advertising which is not allowed on here (at least not for free!)
    People banned routinely for that.

I'm currently using srixon zstar XV at the moment. Like them but wondering should I be using something softer. My driver swing speed is around 103 mph.
I've only a few srixons left so might look for something different when they're gone

Why do you think you need a softer ball? Are you not getting enough check or does the ball not feel right? If you're hitting the ball well and it feels good off the face of the club, I wouldn't bother changing.

Having said that, as I said earlier, if there's a different brand of premium ball going for a better price you might as well give them a go.

Just that Srixon advertise the XV ball for swing speeds over 105mph. So maybe it's not fully suitable for me.

But then recently Titleist have started to say that swing speed makes no difference to what ball you use

A lot of this is marketing. I think it was Bubba Watson in an interview that said if this was really true, then he wouldn't compress the ball with half of his clubs. And he does.

I have been getting decent tour balls for years be the pro-v's, callaways, nike etc... I generally found little or no difference between any of them.

I recently purchased a box of cheap balls Callaway Warbirds. OMG did I notice a difference! Did I what? Not really off long shots, but anything near the green they were pretty bad in stopping. Now I'm not the bees knees when it comes to putting spin and controlling the ball, but it was amazing the difference once these balls hit the green, they kept going...and going...and off the back!!!!

Net result is where in the last year or so my game has improved a lot and I have found myself putting for birdie a lot. But recently, I'm finding those birdie putts are few and far between and when I think about it, putting with these balls is quite different also. The "feel" just isn't there.
