Buying in UK - advice on what car to go for

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated - Myself and the gf moved to the northern UK recently and need to get a car now, primarily for herself to commute 20 miles each way to work daily, and spins at the weekend.

Looking for a small hatchback, something like a fiesta/corsa class.
Budget is max £5000 - what we're looking for most of all is reliability and reasonable to run, ideally nothing older than 5 years.

Pretty inexperienced with buying cars, my only car has been a 00 Golf which was a hand-me-down, herself bought a brand new Fiesta in 2011 alright which she sold before moving here. She really liked that car, would another be the best or maybe there is some better options?
Any advice would be great thanks.

You will most likely get into a current shape Fiesta for that sort of money. Miles better than a Corsa. Have a look at adverts on the likes of autotrader.co.uk.

A pitty she didn't just take her car with her when you moved.

Stick with what she likes, fiesta is a good little car, £5k should get you a 2011 in the Uk

Yes a pity indeed, needed the cash unfortunately at the time and had no necessity for a car until now.

Fiesta I think seems a good choice, seem to be on the expensive side though, struggling to find many 2009-2010 models for €5k. Probably the best car to go for in this price range though?

The older model isn't a bad car either, should be able to pick up a run out model.

Thanks for replies so far. Any opinions on how good/reliable 09-10 Fiat Punto is? Or similar year Vauxhall Corsa? Seem to be a lot more of these in my price range. Peugot 207?
    Thanks in advance.

Punto and Corsa share the same platform and some engines. Suzuki Swift is worth a look at too. Mazda 2 also and it's basically a Fiesta underneath the exterior.
