Declaring a New Car Off The Road

Alright folks, just have a question about declaring a car off the road. I recently bought a new car but it will be lying up in the driveway for the next month (until my insurance on the other car expires). Ideally I would not like to pay a months tax as it's a fairly large engine so can I declare it off the road for July and just undeclare it at the start of August? I know there is a ten day limit for this when you buy a new car and that's ok but from my understanding you can only declare it off the road for a minimum of 3 months?

3 months is the minimum period.

when you eventually tax it, it over-rides the SORD. I've no idea why they give you 3 6 and 12 months options! Pointless, may as well just go for 12 and tax it when you are ready

So you're saying that I can declare it off for 6 months, then tax it 1 month after declaration and have it back on the road? That seems a bit silly alright. Thanks!

That's exactly how it works. The SORD is cancelled as soon as you tax it so before your tax expires you must either renew your tax or declare it off the road again.

I'm not sure if that's OK.
Car needs to be registered in your name in order to declare it, and very likely it won't be considering delays at Shannon.

He needs to complete Part C of Form RF150 and submit it within 10 days of the date of purchase. According to the notes on the form Shannon don't need to already have processed the change of ownership as they'll cross reference the non-use declaration with the sales notification part of the old VLC.
Part C only when making a declaration of non-use immediately following the purchase of a second-hand vehicle.
The period of non-use must commence in the month in which the transfer of vehicle ownership took place.
The declaration must be completed and furnished within 10 days of the date of sale given on the Notification of Transfer of Vehicle Ownership – this will be checked against the information on the Notification submitted to the National Vehicle and Driver File by the seller of the vehicle.

Is the new car going to be insured while parked up for a month?

    No, why would that matter?

Not a requirement, it's just that you'll have no protection in the event of fire or theft or possibly even vandalism. Many are willing to accept that risk, some aren't and a few regret risking it.

To add, it also needs to be parked up in a private place and not on a public roadway.

Indeed, the OP already said it would be "lying up in the driveway for the next month" which presumably is why kuro2k raised the question.
