Modern/pop anthems?

    Hi all,

The solo gigs I've been doing up to now are in pubs where the clientele are nearly all in their 50s and upwards. Hence, it's been trad, folk, country, and the odd 60s/rock song.

Two things: (1) I'm getting a little fed up of this (2) I've noticed a few younger people in the pubs over the past few weeks. So, I'm looking to learn some more modern songs.

I need to lean on the pop/anthems side of things since it's jukebox pub music, but not being down with the kids these days (I'm 37), I was wondering if anyone could suggest a few titles/bands to start off with?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated - thanks.

Google Top 100 hits or similar and take it from there...you'll spot a few. Keep your radio on too if you want to pick up on whats hot..

Never assume that just because a person is young they like 'modern' music. I never cared much for a lot of the modern music. I'm in my mid 30s and among the artists I have always liked as Tom Waits, Moon Mullican, Hank Williams Sr, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and James Taylor to name a few. Some not even alive when I was born.

Now don't get me wrong, there is still some good modern music out there. I like a lot of what Ed Sheeran does and bands like Mumford and Sons are excellent too. The main problem with modern music in the mainstream is it is all boybands and also this new horrid Irish country music.
