Lost iPhone, other methods besides "Find My iPhone"?

My gf's brother lost his iPhone, have tried locating it with Find My iPhone but the battery is more than likely dead or has been switched off. Is there any other way of tracking it down? Can Apple locate an iPhone once the battery has gone, last known location or anything? Thanks.

Unfortunately not - if find my iPhone doesn't work then you're out of luck. FWIW if it's running iOS 7 no one will be able to use it and it's pretty much junk to everyone except the owner.
