    Guys,

Is it ok to delete all the files in /var/lib/opkg/lists in Vix?

I read that it is in another forum, but wanted to double check.

When you do a fresh flash all of the system files are overwritten. How did you end up with oe packages? The vix ones are normally in there. It's probably not a good idea to mix and match due to incompatibilities between images.

No idea. The only images I have ever had on the box are Vix images eg Vix, Zeus, Helios, Apollo.

I will check tomorrow/today and see what is in there since I have now done a new flash.

    Cheers

I presume you are actually doing a full flash install each time? i.e. download an image and uzip to USB stick, power off box and re-flash from USB stick? Not doing updates by any chance? The latest VIX (014) requires a complete re-flash. You can restore settings from earlier VIX release, though,

    Hi
Yes brand new, unzipping and all that jazz. I did the latest one on the list last nite, can't remember if it was 12 or 14 though, but it was the latest one.

That screen shot was taken prior to the flash.

Did not do a restore coz I wanted it brand new like you and radiowaves suggested.

I might have a solution to autobouquet e2 not restoring now too, will check it out later.

    Regards

iba - I was going to raise the issue on the vix forum, but I'm not going to be on there much tonight, so you could paste the details into a query there. Maybe Andy will be on and can answer why the oe stuff is being included. Maybe it's part of the build he does for the GB 800se? You don't have opkg manager installed as a plugin - do you?

Ok will do WoS. WoS link:

No, do not have opkg manager installed - I do not even know what it is :)

@iba - I'm none the wiser. My Miraclebox Twin has similar oe prefixed files in the list folder. Have posted in your thread on WoS.

I see Abu says leave them alone. But I am sure that I read somewheere else on WoS that they should be deleted. I think maybe Van Dars or Sicillian

Well at least you have the same, so I am not alone :)

I see the posts you and Abu had.

I do not understand what any of that stuff is, but I do notice that my files are huge compared to what you and Abu have.

No, the file sizes are similar if you look at my screen grab in the WoS thread - I'm not sure what abu actually listed in his screen grab - they are all CONF files. I have a 6MB file and a 1.5MB file also in my list. The opkg lists in /var/lib/opkg are for the correct maintenance of the system if/when you do online updates of packages/plugins or even the complete ViX image. When you do a plugin install (or uninstall) the list is updated and checked to ensure it is current. There are checksums in the lists to ensure what you download is correct and not corrupted.
I presume you are intending to delete them to save space in flash? Is it really that tight? I couldn't read your screen grabs before so maybe you would just type the available flash and RAM figures in MB. I would imagine if you delete those opkg folders you will not be able to install plugins from the menu as it won't find the lists. In any case, as soon as you do a fresh flash, the folders will be replaced.

Thanks for all that education :)

yes, that was the idea - delete unnecessary files to free up memory.

Yeah, my screen grabs do not seem to work like yours. I followed your advice and did the screenshot in openwif. Then copied and then just pasted in here/boards. But whenever I change a channell on the TV, the screengrab/iamge that I posted in boards.ie changes to what ever is on the TV :(

    Anyway memory is

    RAM
    Total memory 144888
    Free memory 3192
    Buffers 2240
    Cached 43404
    Total Swap 262140
    Free swap 260332

    Flash
    Total 103.9m
    Free 39.8m

The 800SE has limited flash memory and the ViX images are about 60MB, so the 40MB remaining is about right. So assuming you're not going to store lots of additional plugins your flash memory is probably ok, so there's not a lot of point in deleting stuff. Just make sure that your EPG settings are to keep the EPG on your USB stick and not in the box flash.
I think your main issue is the shortage of RAM, so make sure to keep the number of extra plugins to a minimum. It might be worthwhile ensuring that your USB stick is a fast one as you have your swap file on it and USB flash memory is much slower than RAM. The EPG file for CrossEPG is pretty big (iirc it's over 10MB the last time I looked) so it's using RAM during normal operation and re-written to the EPG.dat file on shutdown. If your machine is running out of RAM and has to use the swapfile it may slow down somewhat, so a good quality fast stick would be best.

As regards screengrabs - I just right click the image in Webif and save the jpg to my local hard drive on my PC using a unique name. Then I upload the jpg to boards and attach it to the post. I don't use external picture sharing websites. I think what may be happening is that you are saving to the sharing website using the same filename each time and consequently the displayed image in boards changes. You would need to use a unique filename each time you save to gyazo - make sense?

Thanks for all the info. (and your time)

No, I don't expect I will be adding many more plugins, if any at all (to be honest, I don't even know what most of them do).

Yes I have the EPG file being saved to stick (and Picons and backup also). I doubt my stick is fast though, it is a few years old and is only 4gb. I will have to check it out - if you can recommend a fast small one (don't need a big one, do I?) that would be cool.

I stopped using Gyazo after you told me just to right click on the image in Webif. But then I was just right clicking on Webif and posting directly to boards.ie I was not saving it on my laptop first - obviously that was the problem.

I see that Rob Van Der has just uploaded a Vix manual:

    http://www.world-of-satellite.com/showthread.php?39144-VIX-Manual

I have not had tme to read it yet, but I can't wait to read it, hopefully it will help me learn lots of things cause I still have other problems :)

    Cheers

No recommendations as to stick, unfortunately. I use an ancient HP 4GB stick which seem to work well for flashing most devices. My Quad and Miraclebox have loads of RAM and have internal disk drives, so I don't need a stick usually except for flashing or testing picons etc.
