    Hi there,

I've just agreed to buy an 05 Renault Scenic Megane 1.4 petrol for €1750. it drives lovely and says it has NCT until Aug 2015. However, I heard electrics are shocking and also the guy was not Irish and when i looked up the plate reg it was on a foreign website called Plaka Servisi which worries me does anyone know what this website is? Will do a car check later - besides that can anyone tell me what I should have looked for in terms of viewing the car? or anyone who has one?

I know I agreed to take it and it would be bad form to pull out but I dont want to end up with a dud either

Get a cartell on it ASAP. Will flag almost anything 'odd' in it's history. If he's a Turkish chap he might've just been posting about his car online or something.

It's never bad form to pull out. It's your money.

To be fair, if the following have been done recently -

    -Timing belt and water pump
    - Rheostat controller
    - ALL window regulators and looms
    - Two keys locking and unlocking perfectly
    - Ball joints and track-rod ends
    - Discs and pads
    - Electronic handbrake module
    - 4 x ignition coils
    - Recent battery
    - Air con compressor (make sure air con is blowing ice cold)
    - Wiper linkage/wiper motor
    - Throttle body sensor

... it should be a fine purchase

Not at all, I work in a Renault garage for 9+ years, so I know what to watch out for! You can actually bag quite a bargain on some of the older Renault stuff, but you can also buy a bag of shyte too. To be fair, the two biggest things would be the keys and the windows. If its passed a test recently brakes etc should be ok for now. The digital dash clocks are renowned for giving bother, so check and see if they've been replaced and that mileage tallies with previous NCT's.

Older one's yes, no worse than older Opels or VW's tbh

I have been in the motor trade for 20 years and would disagree.
If anything older renaults were better built.

I'd agree to a point, its the 2003-2007 era of Renaults that really were poor in the reliability stakes. I still think the '00 Laguna Concorde is one of the best cars they ever made. I'm not a mechanic BTW...

Thanks so what I want to know is would you buy it or not? I liked it a lot and I said to him subject to bringing logbook and ID etc, I met in carpark which i know i shouldnt but have done for last three cars.

What i worry about is that handbrake and everything is electric and that could cost a lot if it went belly up. I dont see getting much better for 2k though which is my budget.

I have a 06 1.4 Scenic and commute around 120km round trip pretty much every day. The thing runs sweetly - the only issue I have had in the around 80000 km I've had it was that last month a spring in a valve went (I actually haven't a clue what that was!). It's comfortable, has a great driving position & is reasonably nippy (top speed is around 180kph). My biggest complaint is that it is quite heavy on fuel but that could just as well be my driving style.

    I dont mind valeting actually,

A mixed bag. The engine's utterly limp for the weight of it.

Reliability depends on how it's been looked after. Some are horrorshows. Others seem to last. Most of the bad ones will have been scrappaged, however.

The whole point of a Cartell is to check if all the car's VIN numbers and the like add up, so you can get a good history. Or it'll reveal if the car's been cloned. You could always ring up the seller and ask for the VIN/Disk numbers...

Great, theres been a lot of negative stuff about them. 180KPH? really ;)? motor tax says car bought by a dealer in may but he said selling it for his wife? sound dodge? i think i know the answer

The laguna II that came out in 2001 destroyed that brand. It was a great looking car and best in class for safety but was so unreliable and costly to maintain and repair. I safely say the diesel laguna II was worse car I ever owned in everyway. Keys window suspension turbos fuel pumps and everything electrical.

OK i checked the car on mywheels and it says a garage was the registered owner which is really strange. i think i will give it a miss...

    Hmmm....

The one we had hear lasted ten years. The only failure it had was in the TPMS, and old-aged battery.

What killed it was a drive through a flood letting water into the gearbox controller wiring, which from then on decided that it liked 3rd gear and was never going to leave it.

I thought I bought a lemmon and was very unlucky so I joint a renault uk forum to discover it was common

driver and passager front window regulators
driver and passager front springs (broke)
    driver front shock
    ABS sensor rear wheel
    cabin fan switch twice
    rear bushings x2
    Battery
    front control arms x2
    Turbo
    intercooler
    EGR
    washer motor
keys reprogram x2 one was damaged
    tracking rods
    fuel pump
    front discs
    rear discs
    AC recharged twice
    wiring to rear lights
tyre pressure sensors repair 4 time finally had it programmed out.
    Reprogramming of sunroof twice
    1 alloy wheel
car died at less than 130k
gave up repairing it and always had a small oil leak that reanult never really fixed

only had the car 3 years and put up 45k miles at repair costs of over 6k
+ service at every 10k with mini and major services

bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee 5 years cost just over 1k in parts + schedule servicing

the laguna was by far the most expensive car to maintain and never got 6 months out of it without something breaking.

car always service by renault main dealers

loved driving the car it was 6 speed 120bhp good on fuel and quick. When I first got it I couldn't understand why everyone wasn't driving one. After owning it I should have sold it on after 1st year foolishly believing its fixed now so should be reliable.

The reason renault mech said I had so many issues was the factory 17" wheels transfer to much vibration into the suspension and the diesel engine was heavier. Maybe but more likely it was put together with cheap parts

I have a very comfortable 2002 Renault Megane Scenic 1.4 petrol. All is good with it and pasted the NCT except for some faulty wiring, ie when the indicator light is flashing so does the stop n tail bulb!
Is this a huge big problem to get fixed please?
I need this type of car because it is high up and I do not have to stoop to enter or leave; I cannot walk much distance with back problems n heart disease.
    Thanking you in advance

    a) don't resurrect old threads like that
    b) the mass connector in your tail lamp corroded. Clean it up, easy job - just don't know how easy it will be to get to it :>
