I played a tee shot on a par 3 today, ball goes left into some forest area. Found the ball along the row of first trees but it's in some long grass right against the tree so it was nearly impossible to hit for a right handed like myself. Do I need to hit another from the tee or can I take a drop for a one stroke penalty ?

You can take an unplayable drop for a 1 shot penalty

    Rehit the shot
Two club length drop no nearer the hole from where the ball is
back as far as you want on a line from the flag to the ball

So if you were just along the first row of trees you could take the drop within two club lengths but if you were miles into the trees you'd have to rehit the original shot?

Sometimes it's possible to go back in line and hit over

    1. Rehit it from the tee. You may tee it up again.
    2. Drop it within two club lengths of the unplayable lie no nearer the hole.
    3. Go back on a line as far as you want keeping the spot of the unplayable lie between you and the pin.

Each of those options cost 1 penalty stroke.
