    Hi. I've just bought my first car. The logbook has been sent away and I am waiting on it to be returned. For change of ownership. My questions are;

What is my next step after gettin it back?
Do I have to go to the guards etc?

Can I insure it and tax it before I get it back?

    Thank you

No need to go to the Gardaí.
You have to tax it and be insured before you use it (and that includes parking) in a public place so just keep it parked up in a driveway. You don't need the log book for insurance, any details they need (make, model, colour, VIN) can be got from the car itself or perhaps the insurer can get it from the national database.

You should also be able to tax it without the log book but you do need to provide details of your insurance policy.
Go to www.motortax.ie and use the PIN Retrieval to request a PIN which they will email to if you are registered as the new owner. Use this PIN to buy Motor Tax online but note you still can't legally drive until you've the disc displayed but you should have it within 3 working days.
Perhaps call into your local Motor Tax office, they might be able to provide one on the spot if you're in a rush.

Also if the car requires an NCT you must also have a valid NCT disc displayed before you can drive it legally.

Will I not have to back tax it though from the last date it was taxed?

No, from the date that ownership was changed

If it is not taxed tax it. You might be lucky and have some left. You need to insure it. You also need to make sure it has an NCT. If you have any doubts about its recent service history get it looked at by a mechanic or look up how to service your car on this forum

Do I have to go to the guards etc?
No need to visit the gardai unless some sort of a crime happened when buying the car.
Can I insure it and tax it before I get it back?
If you look on the motortax lads website once it says your car has changed ownership you can tax it. You dont have to wait for the log book. You do not need the car taxed to get insured. If you bought it from a garage you were probably given a little slip of paper saying you just bought the car. Stick this to the inside of the window and gardai/traffic wardens are unlikely to do you for having no tax. I have always driven around with this and at checkpoints gadai seem happy if the slip says you just bought the car and it is taxed/insured. Note this is not a guarantee you wont mee the mean whore of a guard who will be a prick but I would chance it
    Thank you

What kind of car is it OP and well wear.

Assuming predictive text made a mess of the end of that and it was supposed to say what year.

Your not the only one who is confused
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=53351309

Make sure that when you do get her serviced the right spec of oil is used. Other than that they are a great engine. My mother has had one for nine years and the engine hasnt missed a beat.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 298 ✭✭Mackas_view

It's the PD oil she needs is that right?

How many miles on your mothers just curious?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭toyotaavensis

I think it is VW 504.00/507.00 is what you need. Double check this before buying oil though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 298 ✭✭Mackas_view

Where would I check? Online or a motor factors just is it? You probably didn see my edit in above post,How many miles on your mothers car?

Thanks for the well wear I get it now :-)

    http://total-gbr.lubricantadvisor.com/Default.aspx?cat=1

Type in your reg and it will give you out a list of total oils. Click on the top one and you will get a sheet detailing the spec.
If this was your sheet the spec is 504/507
    http://total-gbr.lubricantadvisor.com/CustomerData/productsheets/QUARTZ%20INEO%20LONG%20LIFE%205W-30%20-%2002.2011.pdf

After this you dont have to buy total oil but make sure the brand you buy meets this spec.

The mothers car has 105000 miles on the clock. She got the car when it was one. It has needed a few bushes for the suspension, a window regulator and had a water leak which needs a little bit of rewiring and a ball joint but the engine is bomb proof.

Thanks lad. Appreciate it. The timing belt looks brand new on her and the man I bought it off says he done it himself and it is brand new. Would you change it anyway just for piece of Mind? Or take his and my mechanics word for it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭toyotaavensis

I suppose it depends on a lot of things. If you have a few hundred quid lying around the place and are very well off or if like most people you are just getting by will play a part in this decision. Also how much you paid for the car has to be a consideration.
If you paid 500 for the car and it costs 300 to change the belt then it migth not be worth doing.
Also if the lad you bought it from showed you the receipt for buying the belt would be a big part of the decision.

There is no right or wrong answer here unless the belt snaps. Trust your instincts here. If your mechanic says it is good and you trusted the seller and are happy then leave it be. If your worried change it.

I'm not well off but have a bit of cash. Bought her for 1850. With 130 on the clock. Would you say a mechanic would know by lookin at her aye,?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭toyotaavensis

It is due every 60000 miles so if you are happy it was done in the last 60 then you are grand. If not then ...

You are probably talking about 300 to do the belt and water pump. Honestly, I dont know if someone can look at it and say but if you trust your mechanic and he says wait then I would go with that.

I am going to be fierce nosy how much are your quotes for a first insurance on a 1.9?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,845 ✭✭✭Noccy_Mondy

I hope you have gotten some insurance quotes already, a lot of insurance companies can refuse to insure young drivers on the more powerful (130, 150 etc bhp) golf's passats etc.
(That's assuming you are a young driver!)

A 1.9 car that's over ten years old may not be the easiest to insure. Best of luck OP.

    I got a quote from chill already I'm 24.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭toyotaavensis

    just to name a few
axa allianz fbd liberty aviva nononsense rsa zurich will quote you
also try a few big brokers like campion, first ireland or britton insurance as they can get quotes from the likes of asguard which you cant get direct.

    I got a quote from chill already I'm 24.
Would you mind telling us how much, in case someone has gotten a cheap quote from elsewhere. Also, how much excess will you be paying? Usually do €300 excess myself, as it's not really worth claiming for anything less.

Chill gave it at 1500 for the year. What's excess ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭toyotaavensis

1500 is this third party or fully comprehensive and have you a full licence?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

Chill gave it at 1500 for the year. What's excess ??

Its the amount of any claim that you have to cover yourself. So lets say your excess is €300 and you make a claim for €2000 then they will only pay you out €1700.

Its designed to stop people making stupid claims, and also to reduce the risk against the insurer (some high risk policies will allow you take out an excess of up to a couple of grand in return for a reduction in the price of the policy).

Jesus 1500 is insane for a 24yr old.

My own is 520 and I'm only a year older. First policy/car too though I've been named since I was 17.

I was paying 1100 as a 24 year old on a 1.6 ford mondeo with 2 years NCB,so I know how the OP feels

the named driver experienced clearly stood to you!what insurance company are you with OP?i'm with AXA.

I'm 23 2 years no claims on my own policy and two as a named driver. I'm driving a 2.2 litre bmw 320. Got quoted 1100 by liberty but then asked them to put my parents on as named drivers. Got quoted 820 then and went with that. Since I'm the riskiest driver of the three of us adding hem reduced the quote massively. Wish I'd known this over the years.

Seems like I'm getting shafted so.

23, 6 years NCB and the lowest I can get for a 320d is €840 via broker

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭toyotaavensis

Lads do ye not ring them all and get a quote (use saynoto1890.ie).
Then start telling the second and third cheapest lads about the chepest and when one of these is the cheapest go back to the first one and do some haggling.
I saved about €100 on the cheapest quote this year
    €200 last year
can remember before that but it always saved me a few bob.

I know I have a 1.6 avensis and it is not as powerful as the BMW/passat 130bhp but I am sure ye can save a few quid.

If anyone wants any advice give a shout. I used work in insurance a few years back.
