Hey guys, I'm a 19 year old male driver and have held my full license for the last year and abit. I'm looking for a car that would be great on juice, very reliable and nippy aswel. I have a good knowledge about motors, but I would defiantly appreciate any advice. Im looking to spend around 2k or 2.5k!

Honda Civic...perfect..great on juice..ultra reliable and good pick up on it...if insurance isnt going to bother you...id get a quote on the civic and try quotes on 1.25 fiestas and other small cars...toyota corollas are reliable too..

To be honest I would prefer a diesel more than a petrol.

How many miles a year will you be doing? You're probably better off with a petrol and it will be hard to find a decent diesel on that budget.

Well I'm from Roscommon and will be travelling to Limerick every weekend for college!

You really need to be doing 18000+ miles p/a to justify a diesel.

There are also insurance costs to consider, if you want a VAG diesel you'll get crucified on insurance.

2500 should get you a decent 1.4 Corolla hatchback. They are an excellent car.

I was looking at peugeot 206 or 307, can be got in a 1.4 hdi or 1.6 hdi for around the price I want...... anyone have experience of a peugeot?

On your budget you will be buying one that's better days are behind it rather than ahead. 307s are hit and miss around reliability.

I'd be looking at something like a MkI Ford Focus 1.8TDDi or a 1.8TDCi if you can find one. Older more reliable technology and other than maybe replacing the DMF they tend to be solid. Don't carry the insurance loading for young drivers that VAG diesels carry either.

    I would avoid.

A Corolla 1.4 d4d should be fine too. 90bhp which is perfectly adequate and better build quality then any of it's rivals.

At your age, you'll get crucified on insurance for a Golf, Passat, A4 etc diesel.

A Focus or Corolla are your best options if you're decided on a diesel.

Whats the rest of your driving going to be like? 350km a week round trip isnt huge mileage in the grand scheme of things (its about 14k km over the college year).

At your age and budget you will need to avoid VAG diesels. You'll pay heavily for insurance and I would wager the majority of cars will have most likely had a hard life.

As above, I'd recommend a focus 1.8 TD myself. They're fairly reliable cars and give little hassle. A friend of mine has a 00 estate at the moment knocking on 400,000 miles. He has done about 25,000 of those and it hasn't wanted anything other than servicing.

Another one worth considering, as above, is an older model Corolla diesel. Most would have lived a hard life though so finding a good one will probably be difficult. A newer model one will most likely need work or be rough.
