Hey all just looking for advice. Called about a car on done deal, looked great, taxed until June 2015 ncted until May 2015. So he says. when I called the guy was a bit cagey about giving his exact address. I had a report done on mywheels which says tax expired in 2013 and nxt expired in 2011!

Could he be having me on or could it be it's been done recently? Really appreciate some advice!

Yeah I'm pretty broke and it seemed like the perfect deal! Should I call him and ask about it?

It also said in the ad it was 1owner since new, but apparently it changed hands in 06 according to the report...
If I do go, I'll bring the boyfriend with me for a second pair of eyes.

Never by a car at the side of the road or a car park. If the so called owner doesn't want to conclude business at the cars registered address as in logbook walk away.

How many warnings signs do you need? The seller's a liar, and the car's most likely a lemon. Move on.

All the red flags are showing unless your boyfriend is a garda with the intention of arresting the guy what do you expect him to lookout for.

    You know the saying
Fool and their money is easily parted.

It will be too late once you hand over the cash to resolve any issues with ownership or false documents.

Walk away. Honestly. A genuine seller will have no problem in meeting you at their house or place of work (And be able to prove either) They'll answer any question and generally be cordial as, guess what, they want to sell the car.

A friend of mine, who now knows better, was a sold a car by an 'ex Garda' that "didn't need an NCT" and the engine light was a '€50 fix' I was abroad at the time but I almost killed them when I came back and found the car in the drive. Keep looking within your budget. We all want a fancy car but the low hanging fruit from the 'top end' is usually utter rubbish. Cheap is cheap for a reason.

And I'm not trying to be disrespectful, but unless the bf is a mechanic then its no use bringing them. Anyone with an emotional attachment to yourself e.g. Friend etc, is going to want the 'best' for you and may inadvertently encourage a purchase because they see it makes you happy etc. I get asked to go to a lot of viewings for cars but I always start the day with 'I'm only coming to be a second set of eyes and get an initial look over. If you want to buy this car, we're going to a mechanic and you based your decision on their assessment, not mine'

That's the problem with bargains, everyone wants one but nobody gets one.

I would never have sold any of my cars if that was the case. I would rather not have every tom, dick and harry on my doorstep, thank you very much.

And I'm not dodgy............... that's what the nurse tells me anyway!

    Report him to DoneDeal.

As suggested, the bangernomics thread is an excellent place to look for cheap cars.

Walk away unless you want heartbreak.

I most certainly wouldn't have bought any car from you. Especially if you attempted to do business on side of the road.

Bet you use catch phrases sold as seen, caveat emptor and sneek back to your hiding place hoping they didn't notice the address on vehicle certificate

Nope, I wouldn't have you coming near my house, enough nut jobs out there.
There are other places besides the 'side of a road' that sales can be made. And what are you talking about 'catch phrases'? I think you have issues.

I'm selling a car. first question people ask is why are you selling it. honest answer is because i got another car from work.

So, if i bring them to my house, they now know where i live, that i work, and that the car being sold is going to be sitting here all day while i am at work as i have another car.

So i was meeting someone sight unseen i am not going to do it at my house. believe me you get as many chancer buyers as you do sellers. if, after viewing at a public place, the person is serious about the car, genuine, and not trying to pull a fast one, i have no issue concluding the business at the house.

but if you honestly would let every chancer who calls for a car come to your house from the very off, then you are a far more trusting person than most, which i doubt very much

Depends............. will the person coming to view the car at your home be using the phrases "Boss" and "Periwinkle blue" as they have a nosey around the outside of your house?

Your address is on the log book, so any objection to someone coming to your house is nonsense really. If say I want to rob a car, I'll meet you anywhere because I'll just ask to see the log book and I'll know where you live regardless. Same applies to your mobile number. The amount of information you can glean from someone's number alone is astounding.

In fact I'd be of the opinion bringing someone to your house is safer its unlikely someone who wants to rob a car is going to want to show their face for too long or twice in the same place. And if they do, thats whats insurance is for. Trying to outsmart a thief is pointless. If they want it, they'll have it.

That depends on your address. If you live outside of a town/city you may have an address that covers a large area(no house number or estate).

and throw the mobile away as soon as he's gone with the car..

You don't have to show the log book if you think they are a chancer or worse. You're right in that they'll have it if they want it, but that doesn't mean you have to roll over and make it easy for them.

it's probably all futile, but this assumption that anyone who won't meet you at their house the first time is a chancer does my nut.

Thats because they are shifting on crap and know it will cause problems when the tipex service and T/B done turns out to be wishful thinking. Or overheating problem only shows up after hour of driving.

and based on the reports, anyone that buys a car at your house either has a fake bank draft or dodgy notes.

dealers can't be trusted and are clocking miles

only solution is to never sell a car and let those that can't afford to buy a new car take the bus.

If you're selling then you don't have that luxury.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 866 ✭✭✭renofan

On the purchasing a car from the "side of the road" I bought my Wife's car, (it was a 3 and a half yr old Focus at the time), after having first met the seller in the car park of Kildare Village and after having a good chat with him, taking it for a drive and getting a cartell report, I met him in Lidl in Naas to finalise the deal and take the car. Granted I paid by cheque, wouldn't pay cash. That was 6 years ago and we still have the car.

I went with my gut instinct. I've never sold a car and I don't know about people calling to the house, don't think I'd trust everyone that comes.

Was the car located in Meath by any chance?

A relation ask me would I go view a car for them
renault laguna 1.6 petrol looked to be in good condision in photos mileage not too high.
NCT till Feb 2015. 850 euro asking price. Currenly up on DD

Phone guy said all the right things but wanted to meet in car park. I said I ring him back.

Spider sences are tingling by now so I went to NCT web site and inputed reg number to check when NCT is due next. April 2014.
Guy had about dozen cars advertised on DD that its self wouldn't put me off. But does make me suspicious of dealing in car park.

So I guess its got a false NCT disk so didn't bother go view it in some carpark.

Told relation and they asked how I checked NCT
I told them and that they are a small time dealer.

Relation phone me back 15 mins later and said they check 4 of the other cars in his adds and their NCT wasn't correct either. (Advertised with NCT when in fact they have none)

If I had of bought that car in car park you can be dam sure once fake NCT came to light that that mobile would be switched off.

Surely though you could involve the police if you discover someone is selling a car with a false NCT?
