This is a thread for the very serious discussion of issues related to gender equality and all the -phobias/-isms from a running context.

Its somewhere to direct people when other threads become derailed due to these issues. Lets see how busy/popular this thread becomes? Id say not very.....

Disclaimer: I think women are great, men are great, gay/lesbian people are great, bi-people are great, bi-curious people are great, transgender people are great, and all the races, religions, cultural groupings and ethnicities are great. Hell, even triathletes are great.

To get the ball rolling - I think TRR should have gone sub 6:40 in the beer mile. Why is speaking figuratively, like saying that he ran 'like a little girl'? not ok?

...Because it's a dreadful example of figurative language: TRR didn't run 'like a little girl'; most little girls would have gone sub 6:40.

Note, I'm joking - I think TRR's beer mile was a thing of beauty.

That was quite a spat alright. Have to say I agree with T Runner - the origin of the term is irrelevant: what matters is that it relies on a general perception of women as relatively weak and unsporty to be "funny" for some. Without this general societal stereotype it would make no sense; but yet it helps perpetuate it. This happens whether the slur is intentional or just "banter".

But anyway we've been over all that. No doubt it has helped a few cogs to slowly turn.

    When was "unsporty" ever implied?

The term is acknowledging biological differences between genders using facts which are generally known (though admittedly not always understood). Acknowledging relatable differences in a context which is known to the general public. It is the same as saying he is as slow as a tortoise, well known relatable biological fact that can be used without further explanation.

Is saying that ectomorph's are at a genetic disadvantage in weight lifting and strength based exercises in any way diminuating a person? no its acknowledging their unique characteristics.

Hypersensitivity can be just as harmful a way of excluding people also, if, it alters social interactions of an individual. Embrace differences rather than aiming to ignore them, that does not mean I condone discrimination in any shape or form but simply think that social interactions do need context for use of phrases

    No, no, no, no, NO!

    Tri-athletes are never ok.

There's a distinct lack of a female perspective around here. I bet every club has females that are well used to rolling their eyes at each other at some of the clumsy, sexist remarks uttered, usually but not always, unintentionally by their male colleagues. We really should be able to come up with something better than "you run like a girl" when engaged in the important task of belittling our fellow athletes, in all seriousness. Answers on a postcard?
