Group trip to USA: can we skype each other on smart phones?

Travelling with a group to the USA. If we buy international 'data' packages before we go, can we use Skype from our smartphones to contact each other in the USA? Most of the operators here offer 30 day data packages for the USA. Rather than buy payg phones and sims over there?
