    Hi all,

I was putting up some curtain poles over the weekend but the bloody bracket has pulled away from the wall and has broken the plasterboard.

I therefore need someone to modify the bracket for me so that it makes it more robust and avoids fixixing in the area of the damaged plasterboard.

could anyone recommend a small engineering firm, blacksmith, metal worker who could help me out?

I'm based in Blackrock in Dublin.

    Thanks,

    D

What metal is the bracket made of ?
Any pics and description of the mod required ?

    Hi,

Regarding the metal - I'm not sure. I would imagine that it is iron or steel.

Please see attached some photos. The modification that I think that is required would be to either weld/bolt another piece to it so that it provides connection points abobe the level of the existing bracket to the wall. The alternative is to fit a T section which would allow screw fixings either side of the existing damaged plasterboard.

Try calling Delvo Engineering .. may be able to quote you for this .. They do metal fabrication and are well respected in the industry - http://www.delvo.ie/

Not sure on the costs though ..

The problem I see is with the way you have them mounted, rather than with the bracket itself TBH. Two retaining screws instead of one - one at each end of the slot in the bracket - a better washer than what you have, and make sure that you are hitting a batten rather than just screwing into plasterboard, and you could probably swing off the curtain pole afterwards.

    Hi there,

2 screws were used - it's just that one is removed in the photograph so as not to knacker the wall any further. The top screw was drlled first and then the bottom but the bottom one was catching on the beeding for the plasterboard so had to be moved up which meant that they were relatively close together and weaker as a result.

The two options I currently have are to either:

    1. Modify the bracket.
    2. Raise the full curtain pole up a few inches but this would mean altering the curtains so not that simple.

The curtains are 9 feet long and not light so I would prefer to give the bracket more fixing points to make a better job of it.

It's not possible to find a batten as the bracket needs to be in the centre of the window or else the rings will catch on it and the curtain wont close in the middle.

    Cheers.

It does look like steel alright.

Seems a very easy fix. If you want, I could do it for you. Prob weld a piece on either side of the slotted part (to keep it uniform) and with more holes, or do whatever you would prefer.

PM me if you want it done.

Would it be easier to fix a length of board across the top of the window, which would be secured to the battens and then fix the curtain brackets to the board?

Get yourself some frame fixers and a long drill bit fix it directly to the blockwork and you will be able to swing out of them.
