Where to buy Champagne when in France

    Hi all,

I posted a couple of weeks ago about beers in France and I'm happy to report that I've managed to sample some very nice artisan brews while I've been here.

Tomorrow is my last day on La Rochelle. Then on Wednesday I travel back up to Saint Nazaire to get the ferry home but that's not until 23.59 so I have all day Wednesday as well. My mother-in-law has asked us to pick up a bottle of champagne. I think she wants Moet as it's one she knows. We checked out the local Carrefour this afternoon and a bottle was €29. Does this sound about right? Is it cheap by comparison to home?

Either way, where do you Francophiles buy champagne/wine while you're here? Would like to get her the best deal I can. Would also like to pick up a couple of bottles of red for the boss so if anyone can recommend something worth buying at a reasonable price point, I'd appreciate it.

And if we don't go for Moet, or if we were looking for some champagne in addition, what should I look out for?

    I'd really appreciate any help.

    Thanks.
