    Hi

    I have been offered a job as a Graduate Software Developer working with java, c++.
    Pay package and all things attached are pretty good.

    I have been also offered a Job in a company where i will doing a lot of xml, xsl editing work. Very domain specific. Using their own in house built software.
    Pay package is nice here too...

    I am just out of college with a 4 years degree.

    So the question is which role to take...

    Software development using java, c++
    or
    xml, xsl editing

    I would like guidance and advice.

    Sorry you haven't given much information that helps us. Where do you live? Where is the other company based? Who pays more? Do you drive? Which is more easily accessible? Which job spec interests you more? Which company has more room for progression? Which languages did you prefer in college?

    As a grad money shouldn't concern you as much as hands on practical work IMO. I personally would probably take the Java role for the sake of transferable skills.

    Thank you for you advice. i have amended my original post. can you please edit yours and leave the company name out...

  • Seems like a good problem to have, imo you should pick the one you think you'll enjoy more. And take into account location when you're considering it.

    If you can't differentiate then the Java/C++ job seems like it would give you broader skills than the other job.

    Is any of them a large company with a good reputation? Will the name look good on your CV?

    Does either offer lots of training and development (not just empty promises)?

    As this is your first job you need to make sure that it will give you experience in an area that is in demand. You need to think "will this help me get my second job?". On that basis xml editing that is domain specific and done using in-house software is not the one i would be going for. It sounds like a dead-end to be honest.

    Thanks every one for the advice. I have signed the contract for the software development role.
