VW Golf 1.6 Diesel v Volvo S40 1.6 Diesel

    My lad is looking at importing a car from the UK, he has a budget of approx €10500 including VRT so looking to find a car for about £7K, VRT €1800 (approx). He's been looking at VW Golfs, I.6 Diesel circa 2009/2010 and Volvo S40s. I know a little about Golfs and how reliable they are and how sought after they are when he wants to sell on but I don't know anything about Volvos so any advice or suggestions please...?
    I have noticed the Volvos are extremely high spec with lots of features and leather etc so you certainly seem to get a lot for your money.

    S40 would most likely be a nicer place to spend time in given the superior spec, Golf however would have stronger resale value come selling on time.
