Hi I couldn't find a thread discussing peoples experience with car dealerships. It still seems to be very popular for small to medium dealers to bring in UK car imports. I'm currently looking to buy and find it a bit tricky to determine if these dealers are any good. They all seem to offer different types of warranties all insurance based. I have looked at other threads about these warranties and have found mixed reviews but probably leaning on the negative side. But anyway to kick of this thread I'm currently looking at a car being sold by

    Barkshiremotors.ie

Has anyone had any dealings with them? If so what was your experience.
    Thanks in advance

Barkshire Motors Limited was set up on Thu the 29th of Aug 2013 in Co. Dublin. Their current status is Normal. The company's current directors Noel Duffy and Gavin Mc Shane have been the director of 0 other Irish companies between them.

Tbh, id buy private as soon as id buy off a garage offering only these insurance company warranties.
These warranties can be tricky to get money out of, often insisting on the customer paying for full strip down to establish cause of fault and if it's found to be a non warranty item you are stuck with the bill.

These insurance type warranties are more designed to protect the dealer than the buyer. Call it a get out of jail card for the dealer to fob you off by telling you deal with the warranty company directly with any issues who in turn tell you it's not covered under their terms and conditions. These type warranties are a definitely deal breaker for me.

Yeah the warranties don't sound great. Just wondering about this dealership? they seem new so can't find any reviews anywhere.

Another option I was thinking of was going over to England. They seem to be competitively priced even after exchange rate and VRT. I'm looking to buy a volkswagen and I'd ideally like to buy from a VW dealer over there because I've read that manufacturing warranties have to supported Europe wide. But you seem to pay an extra 15% to 20% more for the privilege. There are also the larger Car supermarkets over there like Cargiant, carshop etc. I did phone up Car giant and they were pretty adamant that there is absolutely no haggling on price on any of their vehicles and I don't think they come with a warranty either. Has anyone any experience with these types of dealers?

If the VW had a 2 year warranty at the time here but 3 years in the UK then VW over here will only honor the first 2 years. VWs here only came with a 2 year warranty up until the end of 2011. I've had personal experience of this and had to bring my imported VW up to Belfast to have warranty work done.

Thanks bazz26. So are you saying that if a VW dealer in the Uk offers you a years warranty with your car does that mean its not valid in Ireland?

A dealer warranty is totally different to a manufacturer's warranty. A dealer warranty is only honored by the dealer who offers it.

VW UK offered a 3 year warranty in the UK where it was valid with any VW dealer. VW Ireland did not recognize the 3rd year of this warranty, depending on the year of the car.

Has anyone ever had any dealings with D12 Autos on the Nass Road in Dublin? Whats the verdict?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Personally I'd avoid the naas road in general if buying a car.

Yeah I've been into a few dealers on the naas road and just off the naas road and I would definately not be buying from them. But just wondering about D12. Surely if a full background check comes back clear for finance and if the car has been written off etc. it would be relatively OK, no?

My opinion would be, if I want to buy a car with absolutely no comeback if something goes wrong, I'll buy it off the person that's owned it the last few years and at least get an idea of the life the car's had.

Why do you say that about the Naas Road?

I was down there recently to look at a car (it was gone unfortunately) but I did notice the sheer number of dealers around the area.

Surely they can't all be bad?

There are a number of sites round there (not all of them-there are a few dealers there since time began) that have a tendency to change name/"ownership" with shocking regularity

They're not all bad of course, there are a huge number of dodgy/unprofessional ones there though.

And how would I go about finding out which are which?

Without either of us ending up in court!

Michael /Tynan is sound. He has been on Naas Road north side near Clondalkin junction for yonks.

Michael Tynan is a main dealer though.
We're talking used car dealers that buy in their stuff.

    Morning All,

Has anyone any experience with d12 auto's on naas road? I am looking at chaning car and seen some on their website that peak interest, just that Im bit wary as it looks like a pop up dealership.

    Anyone dealt with them?
