In need of urgent help here. Am leaving the country tomorrow and car broke down. Seems it is engine failure. It's a 03 honda jazz. Has new brake discs pads and tyres. Guy offering 200 for it. I'm parked up at a service station. They said I can leave my car here for a few weeks but im not back for 4 weeks and dont know if its worth waiting as car would be off motorway and hard to access. Killing me to lose this for 200 euro. Advice please.

Get the car toed somewhere secure until a proper mechanic can inspect it or you return from abroad. Without a proper mechanical inspection there is no way I would take €200 from some random guy looking to take advantage of you at a bad moment. I'd imagine that car is worth a lot more than €200 in spare parts alone worst case.

Have you breakdown cover with insurance?
Did a mechanic look at it for you?
    Are you far from Dublin?

Certainly feels that way. I have luggage and belongings in there as well but I made a lot of calls and this was the only offer I got. Hadnt entirely broken down but engine is rattling and loud noise so I had to stop driving. The oil was burned off but there was oil in it before this. I checked it couple of weeks back.

Bout half hour from dublin. No breakdown cover no just boyf and lads here had a look at it. Should I just insist on more than 200? Not sure it is worth paying to have it towed as it does seem like it needs new engine

A healthy Jazz of that year would fetch about 2500 euros, maybe more.

Like it's been suggested, get it toed somewhere safe and if you have time, have it evaluated by a mechanic.

Tell the extortionate bastard offering you 200 quid to **** off. Disgraceful.

Jazz should be worth a bit more but it depends on other factors like mileage, nct, tax, general condition addding the new tyres and brakes. But it's a tricky over a barrel situation.

Does your car insurance cover recovery?
Not sure towing would be covered, but it could be something silly gone wrong.

BTW did you have it advertised or was it someone 'travelling' the byways on an 'irish ethnic minority' status that offer the 200?

Without a proper mechanical inspection then who knows what the exact damage is or how much it would cost to fix. Not very helpful to you at the moment but my personal feeling is that I'd rather douse it in petrol and light a match to it than sell it to some shark for €200. If he is only offering you €200 for it then he knows it's worth more even in it's current state. Even if he had to put a reconditioned engine in it and sell it, he could make a nice little profit on it.

Healthy Jazz over on Adverts making about €1,800

Any know what an engine transplant would be? (in a worst case senario - of course)

You could be looking at up to 1k for engine swap.
if so you need to sell it for 2k to walk away with a little cash after recovery charges are taken in to consideration.

200 euro is too small a price but 500 would be fair price. But thats unlikely to happen on side of road.

Ringing mechanic tomorrow to get his view of it. He isnt far away and might do deal as he does cars up and sells them on. Know him so wont lose by asking anyway.

Otherwise ill advertise for 500 which is fair for someone who knows their stuff and can do the work.

Cheers everyone. The advice was a huge help. Car is safe under camera and im on way out of here!

the 500 was deal at side of road to avoid towing / storage charges. If you paid for towing then look for another 100 to 200

500 side of road 600 to 700 if you paid for towing
