Focus mk1 , i had a terrible stench coming from the engine compartment today and when i lifted the bonnet there was a young dead cat lying across the top of the engine. He must have been there a while becouse he did not all come out when i tried to remove him.Is there something safe i can kill the stench with and remove the rest of the cat without damaging the engine. At the moment my car is sitting on my driveway with the bonnet open.

Leave the bonnet open and go inside for an hour, With a bit of luck either seagulls or magpies will remove most of what remains.

After that use a dishwashing brush (the type with a handle is recommended) and some soapy water with Savlon or Dettol in it to get rid of the residue. Rinse (not too much water to avoid messing up the electrics) and allow to dry.

Dispose of brush - do not return it to kitchen.

A good run should then burn off any remaining odours.

Plenty of guides online on how to clean an engine bay. I would be trying my best with that, and any engine cleaners you can get. Once complete, I would remove the cabin filter, bin it, run the car for a few days and make sure the stench is gone and insert a new cabin filter.

Is there anything to be said for lathering the remains and surrounding area with lighter fluid, tossing a match and walking away.

On a serious note, detol is a must to kill the bacteria (what's making the smell) and changing the cabin filter is probably a good idea too.
