Recently I was speaking with a few guys and home on disease control etc and one item that we could not answer was what is a closed herd

    1. Is there a time limit on when last animal was purchased
    2. Can a Bull or female be purchased & from what source
    3. If the neighbour over the ditch is buying & selling cattle... does that impact you
    4. for Pedigree folks - if they go to summer shows does that impact the 'closed' status as the animal is mixing with all herds

The other question we had - what makes up a high health status herd... I emailed AHI but I have not got any feedback yet

As far as i know a closed herd is some one who can buy in but only sells to the factory.
They can't sell to a farmer down the road

A closed herd is that you don't buy in animals(no buying stock bulls)
once the animal goes to somewhere the animal shares an environment with others and returns to the herd - no longer closed herd(if ya bring a cow to the mart she doesn't come back)
there should be an effort to have good ditches between you and you neighbour so no contact possible.
and have some hygiene programme in place for visitors to the farm(footbaths etc)

would a closed herd have shower/disenfection unit for vet/ai man etc?

    Ideally yes...practically no
start with enforced use of footbaths/overboots

the only places that operate totally closed herds are places like tully or hermitage(pig breeding) both have had disastrous collapses of their biosecurity
