Can I claim carers benefit? Scenario is as below:

-Not on carers leave. Just plainly let go at end of contract.
    -Have the PRSI contributions
-Child is disabled and in receipt of a DCA
    - Disability at this particular time is such that I or my wife do need to be there until hopefully things get better
    - Normally and regularly, all fine, family chip in and wife and I operate as a tag team such were our work hours

Do I apply for carers allowance or benefit?

Apply for both at the same time. You will get benefit while your allowance application is being processed. Don't forget that as you are in receipt of DCA your child's GP doesn't need to complete the medical report.
When you get the Csrers Allowance opt for it cos you will get the electricity/gas allowance, free TV licence and free travel, which you don't get with Benefit.

Is that correct yes, is the turnaround on benefit quicker?

Are they the same form, or two separate forms do you know?

    Thanks for reply MrsByrne

2 different forms. Yes turnaround on benefit is quite good. Turnaround on allowance is at least 9 months. Get both forms tomorrow in your local SW or Citizens Info office fill them in and send them away in 2 different envelopes to the two different sections. Free post.
