Myself and my girlfriend taking the bus into town.. (She has a leap card I have a travel pass) but her leap card didn't have any money which we didn't realise.. We'd no money and had a hospital appointment.. The driver called us back as we were leaving to go back home and gave her the ticket for free.. A lot of **** is said about dublin bus drivers but this guy was brilliant to accommodate us.. She's 35 weeks pregnant and we can't miss appointments so it's really nice of him to let us ahead.. Huge thank you to him..

She may be able to go free on your Travel Pass: http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Can-anybody-join-me-when-travelling.aspx

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

Dublin Bus drivers are the best, compared to other companies abroad etc. I've never once been left behind when I got caught short. Worst that happened was a driver shouting at me for asking for a change ticket (told me he's not an idiot, he can do maths in his head blablabla, how you're not supposed to demand the change ticket from the driver; weird since most drivers don't seem to give change unless I ask, especially when paying with weird amounts of coins)

Have you looked into any of Dublin Bus's prepaid ticket options or getting a Leap Card it is cheaper and would avoid situations like you outlined above

Had a leapcard since the day it came out, this was a year or two ago now anyway and had no money left on it, if I even had one at that stage. It was on a 25 who rolled his eyes at us and opened the door with a scowl on his face when we hailed him at College St, things went downhill from there :v

Did you go all day without food and drink, smokes etc?

Ah here, he had to do that in an exceptional circumstance, not to avoid paying. He's clearly remorseful and paying it back to them, what's the issue?

Going to a hospital and getting caught short. They don't sound like dishonest people and it's not fair to make them out as that on a public forum. They clearly have the intention of paying, and saw the gesture from the driver as a kind surprise, they weren't expecting to be accommodated for free.

Do you really believe the "We had no money" line? If it was a rushed to hospital moment then fair enough but it wasnt.

Please do drop it, and don't bother posting on this thread thread again. That's not a request.

You're generally at people who complain about public transport and now you're at people giving a good story about public transport. Surely the driver would know if the people were chancing their arm all the time and would not put up with it.

I was told people forgetting hospital charts is common enough, so it's not all that far fetched that people forgot money on the way to a bus. Things happens. And I can't see what they did or did not "go all day without" has to do with the topic, the appointment does not last all day.

Note to everybody else: No more replying to the above quoted posts.

    @ Monument:
How exactly is a driver defrauding his employer of income 'a good story'?

all it means is everyone else has to pay higher fares to cover this kind of revenue loss.

Oh come on.. this "we all pay more because of people 'defrauding' the system" argument that's trotted out really wears thin! Again it's the Welfare recipients fault for everything, right?

We all pay more (including those on Welfare!) because of the massive inefficiencies of anything state-run (or formerly state-run but with the same employees/mindset), not because a driver did the decent thing and let a heavily pregnant woman on for free as an exception

You want to complain about the high prices, may I suggest directing your outrage to the CIE board, the Union offices and Leo!

I'd venture to say that the OP is probably more likely to be a frequent Dublin Bus user in a future as a result of his positive experience.

If the driver had told him where to go, you'd probably end up having to pay higher fares because of revenue shortfall greater than that of one trip. If you're going to take this attitude, at least look at it sensibly.

They are generally extremely sound. On the way home from work my leap card had no money, panic ensued as i was about to start patting down my pockets before the driver says (in a liverpool accent if that helps anyone recognize him!) "Ah don't worry about it mate, sort it when you get home".

    An absolute gentleman.

The length I was in town, yeah. We shared a pack of belvita biscuits we brought with us. And the smokes were my electric one which I bought ejuice for last week.. If I had money for the Luas and bus I wouldn't have risked a 100 euro fine just to get food in town

She has a leap card, which I expected to have money and knew we were screwed when the card was rejected.. so no I didn't have any money.. I've never even tried chancing the bus if I'm a few cent off never mind thinking I had no money.. The driver wasn't the only person who helped us, someone else behind us offered to pay our fare.. If I was going into town because I was bored and she had no money and the driver offered her a free ticket we both would have said no, but at 35 weeks pregnant missing an appointment could mean missing something wrong with our baby.. It was a huge shock that he let us have a free ticket and the Luas was because I had no choice, would you prefer we begged for money from people at the Luas?

That's how much money we have... Or rather how much we don't have

We use that route at least 2 times at day and other dublin bus routes and Luas at least once a week
