When purchasing a property the solicitor draws up paper work - is it advisable to draw up a will at that point also?

And is it possible to will 50% of a property to someone?

Regardless of age I believe that if you have any assets it is advisable to have a will in place. You then have control of what happens it in the event of your death. It will also help reduce the likelihood of the legal profession bleeding your estate dry when processing the will.
I recommend drawing up your will as soon a s possible. Some solicitors will do it for free if there is other legal work involved as there is in your case. Anyway a straightforward will can be done quite cheaply. As you progress through hopefully what is a long life you can review your will as circumstances change.
