University Scholar Scheme?

Hello all, I was wondering if there is anyone who has either been given this award in previous years or has any information regarding it? I've read some of the documents outlining the condition of the award and it states that you must have achieved a 1.1 for the year and be ranked within the top 7% of the year class. I would like to know if this means that you are ranked within the top 7% of the students in, we'll say, the whole of 1st Year Science as in the entire College of Science or just within the top 7% of individual courses like 1st Biotechnology or 1st Marine Science etc.? Any information regarding this is thoroughly appreciated. Also, I achieved an overall mark of 85.75% for the year, I was wondering if this would be enough in your opinion from personal experience to make to mark so to speak? Thank you in advance.

I got it in my third year, rules might have changed now but it used to be if you got all A's in your main subjects.

Are you talking about the la na gradam award? I received one this year and my average was 70. I think anyone who has over an average of 67 gets one. Your average is amazing I've never heard of anyone getting so high! Well done. You will definitely get some kind of an award with that.

Yes, 85.75% will make the mark. You will get a letter from the university in the post about a month before the awards ceremony...which is usually in February sometime...

The OP *should* technically get it. In first year you have to get a 1:1 in each module I think and apparently you've to get a 1:1 in 45 or 50 of you 60 credits from 2nd year on. I heard it was 48 but for science students it's pretty much all in 5s). But be warned! Some lad I know got 90% average on the dot last year and didn't get it (only two from his year (financial maths) got it as well whereas 8 from mine (Maths Science) got it, 5 of whom had a lower average than he did!). I don't know if he satisfied all the criteria of the 1:1 in first year but that's how it panned out.

    Best of luck anyways! ^_^

Just found the requirements on the NUI Galway site. There is differences like you say in the requirements for each class.
I imagine that fella you knew failed the requirement of been in the top 7%of his class. Financial Maths would be a small class. That's pretty unlucky with an average of 90%...Here is the link...

Invitations should have arrived by now as I saw a notice that people will be invited early February. Have people received invitations? My average is 70% however there are only 22 people in my class and with only 7% of people receiving the scholar scheme award (according to the 2012 guidelines) do I have a chance?

The various faculties have 2 hr approx ceremonies where the various awards are presented. You are assigned a seat with your discipline and you go up and collect your scholar certificate / award when your name is called. That's the extent of it really. Lovely event.

Tea and cake afterwards too! :)
I wasn't too bothered about it last year as I didn't know what to expect but I came away feeling very chuffed with myself altogether! The speech the dean gives makes you feel very special.

What's the dress code for the ceremony? I assume it's formal dress, so I wouldn't look out of place in a suit?

There were guys there in suits last year and also guys in just shirts and jeans. It's not a very dressy occasion it's quite casual
