Moving to Newbridge - Advice?

    Hey All,

I've seen older posts on this subject, but I was hoping I could get some updated information.

We're planning on moving to Newbridge in the next few months. Kids have been accepted into school (Educate Together) and we've visited a few times. It really seems like a great place. We will both be working from home most of the time, but will need to get into Dublin occasionally for work.

We're wondering what neighbourhoods are nice? We're looking around Walshestown Park, or maybe a bit further out (Athgarvin or Kilcullen). Any advice?

Also - someone mentioned that Newbridge was "kind of rough at night". We didn't see that in our visits or online... is that the case? I'm not sure if that's how Newbridge used to be, or if it's just that most places can be rough at night on certain nights.

    Thanks for your help!

Just one thing I have to say. Have you driven from Walshestown to the educate together school in the morning. From the graveyard to whitewater can be a very busy road around 8-9 am and then through the town and out the station road can be a nightmare at that time of the morning. If I had a choice I'd be looking towards the other side, Milltown area.

Thanks Ken, we haven't had a chance to test the morning traffic, so that is good to know.

The ET school at the Curragh end of the Green Road, so it seems like the school run is to the South and hopefully somewhat opposite of the commuter traffic.

Ah, Sorry. Was thinking of a different school. The school your on about is easily accessible from Walshestown,Athgarven or Kilcullen.

Thanks Ken, that's what we were hoping.

Do you (or anyone else) have any insight into the nicer neighbourhoods and if the town is still "rough". I'm assuming that this may have been an overstatement of a bad experience.

It's no rougher than any other town of similar size. Walshestown is a nice spot. Kinda country, kinda town.

    Hi Guys

I'm about to move to the connell drive area (down by Phfizer) all going well. I will be commuting to south dublin. I'd appreciate any tips on the town itself and the area. I've been down a few times now and it seems nice but of course i'm still worried. Also is their any way to avoid newlands cross ? i know the overpass will hopefully be in by next year but at the moment its an awful set up. Any input appreciated.

    Thanks

Connell drive is a nice area. Your outside the town but only 10 min walk from the centre of town. If your near the road though it could be noisy cause Lidl warehouse is up the road and lorries do be going all day and night.

As for avoiding newlands cross you could go through Saggart, up the Tallaght bypass and on to the M50 at the firhouse roundabout. Don't know if that would be any quicker. I don't do the route regularly or at busy times.

I live in nearby Wellesley Manor. Connell Drive is a nice estate. In fact, this end of the town is pleasant and relatively quiet. As the previous poster mentioned, the nearby road towards Lidl can be busy enough with trucks but inside Connell Drive is nice with a big green area. The walking route to the town (through the football pitch) means that you can be at the bottom of Main Street or the Liffey Park in about 5 mins. Best of luck

thanks for the responses guys, I wasn't aware of the Lidl warehouse being so close but the house is in off the road anyway.

richiek83 The lane by the football pitch looked a bit dodgy when I was there last am I being paranoid ?

Apologies for the delay in responding. I'm living in Wellesley Manor for nearly six years now and not once have I encountered a problem on that laneway. On saying that, I've never walked it in the early hours of a morning!!

In all fairness, it does look a bit dodgy but it is generally safe. It is used by many people every day including students going to the nearby schools. It is fairly busy pedestrian route. Hope this helps.

Can some kind soul please advise as to what it's like in the area close to the railway station? Would it be a good place to buy a property?

Thanks for your honesty, much appreciated! Is there a suitable location which is somewhere within a reasonable walk to the train please??

Newbridge is a fine town to live in. Walshestown is a lovely area with some lovely estates. As regards the crime it's no worse or no better than any other town it's size. Most people I know who live on the outside of the town and who socialise in the town usually walk in but taxi it home.

Used to live in college farm for 5 years, had some minor anti social behavior but nothing compared to Dublin, the town is grand in general but some of the council estates would have a little more trouble than the private ones.

The estates right beside the train station are fine The great southern and sarsfield drive(the shooting and stabbing were in the estate opposite )
Loads within walking distance over the bridge from the train station - Pierce lodge (apartments ), The meadows in a new estate and so is Roseberry hill. Back in the town you would also have collage park, collage farm. Close enough aswell Dara park, Highfield, Pairc Mhuire, Allenview Heights, Lakeside Park, once you stay on the right side of the main street every where is really within walking distance to the train station.

16,000 knife crimes in London last year! - But i still drop over.

5700 serious car crashes in Ireland last year where hospitalisation was required - i still drive 60,000km + a year.

The stabbing was probably more serious than the shooting as it was random - it was also very unusual as a random attack is very rare. The shooting was between 2 scum and both have been charged and appeared in court.

So rather than an media style hysterical headline, try putting perspective on something and you'll find its not that bad.

Overall Newbridge is safe at any time once you follow normal safety precautions you'd follow anywhere.

Lived there most of my life and would love to go back if I could convince the OH.
Its a grand town, yes there are some rough areas, but show me a town of similar population that doesn't have the same issues.
There are private estates directly beside the train station and council estates across the road, mostly with well settled mature families.
Plenty to see and do, and the Riverbank Theatre is a fantastic addition to the town, always something of interest on for adults and kids.
The only downside is the traffic, it can be chaos at busy times.
