    hi there

just wondering anyone have any advise!

are booking tickets to Canada for next month, the total is just over 4500 euro.
    3 adults 1 child
The problem I have is we only have a Visa Debit card which has a limit per transaction of 1500, with a daily limit of 2500!.
I tried with ebookers and they can only split the transaction by buying the tickets in 2 and 2, however the amount is still over the 1500 in one transaction!

The card is visa debit through permenent tsb- speaking with them yesterday they really couldnt help they said as they couldnt change the limit.

I have use of a credit card, however this has a limit of 1800 on it.
If I deposit the cash onto the card does this allow you to spend over the limit ?, i.e. does the credit card get into credit ?

    many thanks

You can use the CC method but will take a few days probably to get the cash on the card.

I think with the late booking then the airlines prefer the cash up front.

Can you go to a bank and get the cash and go into travelfinders or gohop and do it that way?

Maybe check with the Airline if you can pay by bank transfer, its possible with KLM and a few others.

    its with united airlines.

ebookers can do it also, but they can only split it whatever way the tickets fall, i.e. 4300 breaks down to about 2200 and 2100 which goes over the 1500 limit per transaction!

with regards the credit card, would it let you use over your limit if you deposit funds onto the card?, i.e. limit is 1800 but would put the full amount in it

Yeah you could lodge money to the credit card, my OH has a credit card with a €500 limit but she has booked flights of €1400 on it by lodging money onto it as such,
The only thing is I'm not sure how much money you can transfer to the credit card!?

The limit is 10000 euros before you have to go filling out forms.

Be careful, for their own reasons, some credit card companies don't like the practise of preloading a credit card to bypass a monthly spend limit/ credit limit.

I would have thought that an "old-fashioned" bricks and mortar travel agent should allow you to pay by banker's draft. Get the approx amount from them in advance, get the draft go to the TA, and then pay with the draft and supplement as necessary with your debit card.

Never had a problem with MBNA.

Never had a problem with MBNA.

As I said, some don't like it. Probably not so much of an issue if you've had it for a while.

On new cards, some cc companies like the idea of starting of a new account with a low credit limit and being able to control new account activity for a while. They see over-paying into the card as thwarting these attempts.

With BOI I called them and they said that there was no problem but that the money I spent while in credit on the card was not protected.

E.G. If the company went bust I couldn't do a charge back.

That's very interesting, and not one that I'd heard before.

I wonder is it correct, or was the CS making it up.

I had similar problems before when booking flights for Oz. I had a laser card and a CC.
The laser had the limit you mentioned above. And because I stil had a student CC, they had put a restriction on the transaction total. In the end I had to use my fathers card to pay some of the flight - and my card for the remainder.

When I got my new CC, they advised me that there is no limit per transaction. Most cards shouldnt have one of these limits. I cant see any problem for the cc company to allow preloading.

As an aside, I think it works out the best to preload a CC before going abroad anyway. You can use it like you would use a debit card, and I think the fees are lower.

I dont know who to believe either ! It doesnt make sense for the bank to say a transaction is not covered if you are in credit. It is still the same transacation after all. I like to keep my CC in credit when I can (HATE paying bank interest) - and I would be fairly annoyed if the bank tried to say I wasnt covered just cos I had lodged a few euro on the card a week before !

It was a few years ago so maybe its different now, but suffice to say they said they would only cover up to the amount that I spend in Debit, not the amount I put on in Credit.

E.G. I put 500 euros onto my card for spending money on holidays in Gran Canaria, if I was defrauded, only the transactions after a zero balance would be covered.

At the time I did it so I wouldn't be paying cash advance fees.

Turns out I actually did get defrauded but my Travel Insurance covered it anyway.

That's very interesting that your bank couldn't even help you with the situation. Usually with something like that where you call to let them know they can lift the limit since you need to make a purchase for more. If you go into your bank, bring your itinerary and everything that has the amounts and possibly they can help allow you to make one purchase over your limit. If you pay your bills on time, they especially shouldn't have an issue with it.
