I have been living in the UK the past year and its about time I learn to drive. My question is I have my Irish provisional licence but can I take driving lessons with this or do I need to get my English provisional?

You need to apply for a UK one, the Irish one has no international validity. As a non UK citizen, you'll likely have to send off your passport to get one.
