    Hi,

Has anyone bought the dell xps 15 (2013/14)? Seeing if I can get some feedback from someone who has used the laptop for some time. In particular, have you experienced problems such a coil whine, wifi problems or problems with scaling when using 3200 x 1800 resoultion. Overall would you recommend this laptop?

    Thanks

Got one a couple of months ago and think its fairly solid laptop, no wifi issues or coil whine.

I got the midrange 10080p version (with my own SSD) as I reckon I had no need for the super high res, and that Windows still doesn't do the best job of scaling (particularly win which I planned on installing).

Keyboard is shallow, but you get used to it.

One or two very minor annoyances - it does get a little warm underneath when not on table - this was expected but adjust use for environment etc.
The touchpad has a dull matte mark on the main area where fingers connect I cant clean, but is only noticeable in certain light, and occasional the right click doesn't register, but this could be a driver issue.

I am generally happy with the machine, way better than the Lenovo t440p I returned which was 400 more expensive.

Dell have some deals on just now, check out the VIP club.

If you have any specific Qs I'd be happy to help.

Thanks for the reply. How long would the battery last on average when just browsing for example? I've been asking around and apparently coil whine is a widespread issue so maybe you were one of the lucky few.

ye - I was worried about it myself, 3 of us at work all bought one around the same time - I don't think the others said anything and I spent a lot of time listening out for it - plugged in, on battery, under stress etc

    I thought that maybe:

    a) the laptop has been out a few months now and maybe only early users had the issue - or
    b) I am going deaf!

but maybe it is still an issue and I got lucky

Browsing I get a few hour ~4-5 - I have never really measured it properly, but long enough for me to be satisfied.
NOTE - I have the mid range model, which has a smaller battery to accommodate the HDD - the ones that have SSD only options have larger batteries as they rely on the mSATA slot (mid range had mech HDD + mSATA 32gb cache drive)
