When taking a sideline ball. Are you aloud to play it to yourself?

Im just curious. Say for example you have a sideline near the opposition goal and don't want to go for a point off the ground. Instead you take the sidleine but barely hit it and pick it up the ball and hit from the hand. Would that be allowed? Or do you have to hit it a certain distance?

    No, you can't.

Another player has to touch it first, a team mate or the opposition.

    Not allowed. For obvious reasons.

Taking a free to yourself was proposed by the FRC in their first report, but it was never implement.

The thinking was it would speed things up

Most sidelines are hit so short now that they are illegal
    happening in football and hurling
