Yup all the time... Ultimately you are slowing the person down and assisting with road safety, and also saving them a few quid!

EDIT: As far as I know, there is no law against doing that...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 937 ✭✭✭kerten

    Of course !

especially at home country where all speed checks are placed as real traps(downhill intercity roads where car will accelarate by itself, just after 90 km/h-> 50 km speed limit change, etc)

In theory you can supposedly be done for interfering with police business or similar. People here have posted before about getting pulled over it because they were spotted.

Me I always flash to warn of camera vans, Gardai parked up with their arms out the windows, tripod cameras or whatever. Considering I only see such things on motorways or other wide, clear roads I have no problem warning others about the impending cash grab.. safety my ass

I flash if the person looks like their tipping over the limit, ie. 60 in a 50 - but if I see a car ripping ie. 75+ in a 50 I'll let the bastard cry into his cornflakes when he gets the fine

Yep I'm a flasher and sometimes I will even flick the lights at oncoming traffic to warn them off speedtraps.

    Same as.
Some people way way over the speed limit have it coming.

    Yup, always.
Not for checkpoints or that of course, but for flash for cash/go$afe etc

Yes, always flash oncoming traffic to warn them of speed traps

    Nope.

I speed every day. If I get caught I've nobody to blame but myself. Likewise if you get caught. You can argue the rights and wrongs of speed limits all day, but I have no sympathy for anyone that gets punished for knowingly exceeding one, and I want no sympathy if I get done.

I got flashed by an unmarked car lately. Thought it pretty decent of him:D

Sometimes I flash when there's no speed van or garda checkpoint. Just for the craic and to slow them down.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

go safe van yes...Gardaí no.. they could be looking for drunks or uninsured or no NCT and I'd like those guys to get caught

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,594 ✭✭✭tossy

I'll flash for speed vans all the time.

I never flash for check points that's just dumb, you could be tipping off Larry Murphy FFS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 197 ✭✭Pappacharlie

Yes I do now. I used not do it but after all the whole point of speed vans is to slow people down so if I flash I can also achieve this which is fully in keeping with the ethos of speed traps, isn't it? I mean it's not a revenue raising exercise is it???

    only if she's hawwwt

I flash for the cash machines on the road, but same as corktina, not for check points..... cause I want them to catch uninsured or drunk or other cars that shouldnt be on road......

I'm embarrassed by how long it took me to get this :o

Anyway, like others I'll flash for the speed vans, unless it's like what jameshayes posted earlier.

I was grateful to the people who flashed to warn me of a van near where I live. First time I'd ever encountered one there. A straight stretch of road and it was pulled in at a spot where you wouldn't have seen it till it was too late.

    Never.

If you get caught speeding its no ones fault but your own.
Also what if the person you flashed was a child abductor or similar and had an abducted child in the car. You could be tipping them off.
Granted not for gosafe vans but if it was a gaurd with a gun you could.

Yes, but mostly to warn for hazards like sheep or debris in the road.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,792 ✭✭✭Ded_Zebra

I never flash unless the road is very quiet. For the most part I see them on the N11 between the Ashford and Arklow bypasses. On this stretch the traffic is going so slow anyway that there is no way they would be speeding. Then someone flashes them and they slow down to about 50  so to try to keep the traffic moving at a somewhat reasonable speed I don't flash them.
However if it's late at night and the road is empty and I see someone tipping along I'll give them a flash.

Tax checkpoints, goshiet vans, and any hazards like stray dogs on the road.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,433 ✭✭✭NomadicGray

Yep, sometimes I flash speeders even if theres no gatso van

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,035 ✭✭✭goz83

I sometimes flash when I see someone speeding in the other direction. Funny how it slows them down :D

I flash, if there's an accident. Most of the time I flash for the a-holes that have their full headlights blinding me. I'll give them the customary 2 seconds until they see the error of their ways before returning the favour.

Not for speed vans. Its not my problem if they get done for speeding. :pac:

I don't turn off my headlights until the other driver dips theirs.

    One of them eh?

On topic. Yes for cash vans. No for checkpoints. Yes for dangers.

I'll flash every car until the next decent junction. Reason? I do a bit of driving in work. Recently I did the Wexford run for a fortnight. It's haunted with go-safe vans. There was a few truckers who flashed me, and if it wasn't for them i'd have been nailed.

I would like to give a big thank you to all the folk who flash for the cash vans. 80 quid is a days wages to some people, who are going about their business. Get a fine, and you may as well be working that day for nothing.

Thats my logic too. Lets just hope that we never meet each other on the road :P

In response to the op, depends on my mood really, usually I do, but if I'm in a bad mood then I show no compassion!

You're so thoughtful toward others

I flash the lights anytime I see a speed van or a checkpoint. Some guys will argue against the latter but I'll continue to do so.

I'd mark it on Waze or with the new laws in place if I have a passenger get them to do it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,518 ✭✭✭✭dudara

I don't flash my headlights at other drivers to warn of speed traps etc. Thought that habit had died out with drink driving and not wearing seat belts.

I would flash at someone who doesn't have driving lights on in bad conditions or night time.
