Bought a massey ferguson 399 about 3 months ago. Oil light came on today but wasn't sure what type of oil it needs. Can anyone help? Just wondering as we'll is it common for them to need oil so soon as it was bought from a garage man and hasn't done a lot of work.

They shouldn't need too much oil at all unless you were working the hell out of it unless the engine is worn and it's burning oil.

Is it smokey when it's running.

Anyways the oil you need is 15w 40

Don't know what type of oil you need but you should get into the habit of checking engine oil, back end oil and water every day you use the tractor. It only takes a minute.

The light showed a circle with cogs on it if that makes sense. Had to drive 16 miles in it today and was driving hard enough I suppose. Other than that it wasn't worked hard since I got it

That shouldn't cause you to lose oil. Did you dip it

Make sure it's on level ground before you check the dipstick

anyway for that tractor oils are
    engine - 15w 40 eng oil
back axle- something like Castrol agri trans plus 80w

are you sure its engine oil .back axle and engine oil common to 399 and most tractors with wet brakes is universal engine and rear-axle oil for oil immersed brakes. i use super-universal 10w-30. if you drive with a Red light warning with two cogs you should start saving for repairs as you are probably grinding metal.
