Games that can be de-gored like Black Ops 2?

Without wanting to open another debate on PEGI ratings and parenthood, I'm inclined to make my own mind up on what my kids can play, whereas Mrs.Milltown is more of a stickler for the ratings. Black Ops 2 is a game where both sides can be happy, thanks to the option of turning off the blood, gore and bad language. I don't let them play online. I'm not even sure if anyone is still playing BO2 online.

So are there any more games with this "taming" option?

I know there are games like (was it?) Black Ops 1, with the option to skip the airport massacre and similar morally dubious options, but the rest of the game was a bloodbath full of expletives, so not the same thing.

Suggestions welcome but not limited to COD. Shooters with local/split-screen multiplayer is what we're after.

Maybe instead of trying to glorify a shooter buy one of the many family oriented games? I'm not going to preach the PEGI thing but would you let them watch a porn film if the sex was blurred?

    Glorify?
This comes down to fun. We have a Wii to play family games on. FIFA is on the PS3 90% of the time. I wouldn't let them watch porn or anything with an implied sexual theme regardless of how graphic it was because they have no need to lose that innocence yet. On the other hand, they hear about war and killing every week in school as a discussion of current affairs but they still know there's a big difference between a game and the news.
When I was their age I was out playing cowboys and indians, cops and robbers, or army with my pals. We were making peg guns and catapults that could take an eye out. We were making home made explosives out of match heads and two bolts and a nut. Boys are still boys and good vs. evil is still the main theme of most games they like to play. I'm less likely to answer the door to an irate parent of a child wearing an eye patch if my lads are running around an abandoned nuclear facility shooting baddies though.

    Jebus H. Christ!
Did you really just come onto this thread for no other reason than to use a pointless analogy you picked up somewhere else?

By completely ignoring the first line of my post, and the question that was the point of the rest of it?
    Bravo. That showed me.

See here's the difference between putting the controller in to a child's hand and ensuring they're smart enough to differentiate between actual-reality and game-reality. My personal opinion is that games shouldn't be played by those who are under the restrictions. This is even if you can turn the 'gore' off. You're still making a child mimic the shooting and maiming of another which cannot be beneficial to his / her psyche.

Yes yes yes, you can bring in the "sure cartoons were violent back then" argument. But they were one way. Spectated humour. We were clever enough to know that it was over the top and that the character would be back causing havoc next week.

You make the similarity to you playing...outside...using your imagination...with your friends who you knew and trusted. Now flip that to online where you're against pretty much faceless foes who may be screaming abuse (ok, I'm sure you have the mic off).

You ignore the PEGI ratings and the reason their there. Do you think the rating system is some chap in an office stamping anything decent 18+ to get back at the young people? No, it's not. If you need to turn off the blood and swearing, you're kids too young for the game. I play COD and Battlfield occasionally blood or not my kid won't be playing it till I can say yeah he's defiantly old enough to play this without filters. The filters are there for adults who are sensitive to violence so they can still enjoy the game not to give it to your kid to play mate. I don't believe in this bollox that kids who play FPS or TPS games will grow up to be serial killers, but they can get very violent and imitate the games, video games now mostly run 1080p at about 60fps, they're designed to be more realistic and have you more attached to the game, I'm a video game journalist and one thing I often see by other journalists are questions as to how parents let young ones play games they shouldn't especially when they're getting more and more realistic. No idea why you need COD, there's 100s of games on PS3 that a kid can play, games that even id play coz they're much better than COD. Don't ask for advice on games for kids that they shouldn't play and get up in arms when someone tells you that you're wrong.

And the game you can skip the airport massacre is Modern Warefare 3

I can see that it's really hard for you to do, but maybe focus on the last line alone then, and not on all the bits I asked for not to be considered.
Surely in your journalistic experience you can name plenty of games to fit the bill?

    Well, this is a mess.

What kind of games do you want OP? First-person shooters, or just anything that's not too graphic which both you and your kids could enjoy?

To recap: A lot of fun is had with Black Ops 2, specifically playing team deathmatch as a local multiplayer game (just us and a few bots) with the option chosen to remove blood/gore and bad language. We run around hijacked yachts etc. and shoot each other and the extent of the "realism" is, if somebody gets hit, they fall down and respawn. The videogame equivalent to "bang bang you're dead" and the other person going "aargh" and falling to the playground clutching their chest.

I'm not sure why GrayFox chose my thread for a moral crusade.

If there were other games in the COD or Battlefield series that could be "watered down" to a similar extent, I would like to know. Otherwise if anyone can recommend any other shooters that haven't been specifically made for an adult audience, I'd like to hear about them too.

Try any of the James Bond ones? I haven't played any of the recent ones but I played the ones for the PS2 when I was about 9 or 10 and don't remember it being too violent.

Have a look at commonsensemedia.org, gives more realistic games ratings than PEGI.

Cheers! I'll have a look into both of those recommendations.

Cod's ain't that gory any more, I came in on World at War, now that was gory, you'd find legs and arms blown off when you stood on a bouncing betty, and have Keifer Sutherland shouting profanities at you! Best Adult COD ever!

Indeed. In a fit of sentimentality I spotted WaW 2nd hand in Smyths and seeing it was PEGI 16 thought it might be fun with the kids. Gave it a whirl for old time's sake on my own first and was quickly reminded of the Japs in the very first scene burning POW's eyes with cigarettes before getting their throats slit. Traded back in the following day.

Still my favourite COD campaign though.

If they can separate reality and fiction Then I see no harm in kids playing these games. Would you stop your kid playing cowboys and Indians?

I watched loads of action films when I was a kid. Couldn't get enough of them and I'm not a serial killer.

Imo these games should be as violent and gory as the creator wants and it's down to the parents whether they allow their kid to play an 18 rated game

How do you turn off the "Tea-bagging" mode?

    The wha?
I take it this is meant to be some sort of killer blow to my side of the argument, but I have genuinely no idea what you mean.
I have a vague recollection of some sort of tea-bagging taunt in one of the Halo games (never owned an Xbox) but was it included in COD?
