I am in the process of purchasing a gown and need advice on where to get it. There is a devils offer from Moville but I don't want a polycotton gown, nor a 100% wool one. Their shortest gown is 47 inches which is down to my ankles! I looked at E&R but I would have to go to London to purchase it. I like the Princetta one from Stanley Ley and they post it over. Total cost is about €290. SL do shorter gowns which is a bonus Too. Are their gowns good quality? Does anyone know how much they are in Louis Copeland?
    Thanks.

Drag your profession into something approaching post-colonial Ireland and refuse to buy one.

Ede and Ravenscroft are coming over to Dublin soon to sell some gowns etc.

Ask your master or another already-practising barrister for more details. I would help but I threw the flyer out yesterday.

E&R have been and gone! It was today and yesterday in Distillery.

I ordered the Princetta from Stanley Ley. Its wool and cotton. Lovely gown.
Along with a collarette plus delivery it was 317 euro. Im very happy with it!

That's for that lawfilly, I think I'll go ahead and order the Princetta from SL. I was thinking of getting the collette too to save having to get the collarless blouses. Can I ask how long it took to be delivered?
    Thanks

I agree one hundred percent. Elitist assho.es parading around parkgate street.

Or, as some call it, walking to work.

Remember: the clothes don't make the man, or the woman.

Some day, you may require the services of one of those professionals you chose to indiscriminately disparage.

Traditions and uniformity remove the elitism you reference - you may chose not to believe that. It's true though.

That's pathetic on every level. If clothes don't make the man then why do we have a bunch of people choosing to dress in a very distinctive manner?

Some day I may require those services. I will no doubt face a huge charge to do so, the last time the bill was €200 per hour. Given the weird darth-vader gowns cost €300 odd from the comment on this thread, I guess some poor sod of a barrister will have to work for 1.5 hours to afford one....

Please reform your profession and enable the rest of us to access justice at a reasonable cost. A great starting point would be these antiquated traditions...

The advocate has a right of audience before the courts by right, not invitation. Marking the profession out by a uniform sartorial standard is required, even if it is by the simple wearing of tabs.

    Pathetic it is not.

    Required it is.

Legal professional services are not, and should not be free - despite the incredulity you proffer above. Buy cheap, or free, pay twice.

That would be an completely moronic starting point.

A good starting point would be reform the legal aid system so that people who can't afford to access justice can and that legal professionals are paid a decent rate. If you think the profession isn't aware of the shortfalls I suggest going along to your local FLAC where legal professionals are volanteering their time for free.

Some of them are even wearing suits! Oh the humainity.

Louis Copeland on Capel Street will measure you and have a gown sent over from Ede and Ravenscroft. As far as I can recall they didn't seem to really mark up the price of the gown.

For collars, tabs, and studs go to Legal and General in the Four Courts.

I would also recommend shirtbyhand.ie for collarless shirts, although I doubt you would have those in time for the call in July.

Checked the shirtbyhand. Website - can't find the option for collarless shirts. Are they special order?
