Colleague has a 2008 Mazda 6 estate with a small crack on the rear drivers side lens. The crack is approx 7cms long and is located on the wrap around side of the unit - reflective - no bulbs in the area. No plastic shards or gap evident. No moisture ingress. He has placed a precautionary clear tape neatly over the area.

Just having a hard time sourcing a replacement for the estate variant through motor factors snd breakers but I reckon it might be passable ?

Your post isn't very clear as to what exactly is cracked - is it the rear lamp cluster and specifically the reflector part of it?

A crack seems to be acceptable in the reap lamp provided there is no separation i.e. no gap in the lens so no white light visible.

Specifically for the reflector, it mentions a failure for any one of these......
    1. One or both missing or ineffective.
    2. Not red in colour.
    3. Seriously damaged.
    4. Not matching in size and appearance.
    5. Insecurely mounted.
    6. Not fitted symmetrically.
    I'd say you''ll be fine.

Relevant sections are rear lamps (p.44) and reflectors (p.55) here.....

So long as moisture doesnt get into it then Id say it will be fine. However, I cant see it staying moisture free for long with a crack like that in it.

I have passed with a home in the indicatir lense and tape over it.

As long as its dry and no white light vusible you should be fine.

But thrn of course you could get a testwr having a bad day.

I have a similar issue with a rear light unit on a Mazda 3. It has been through the NCT test twice. I'm chasing a dealer hard on getting it replaced (I'm not paying for it, he is).

Only thing I can think of is to make sure that the crack isn't sharp.

Thanks for the input folks. I pretty much thought that if it was failed on the day, then he just had bad luck with one of the testers. I'll tell him to run with it. Cheers again :)
