I have always bought laptops, because, portability etc

but now I want a full fat desktop intel i7 16 gig ram ssd the whole lot.

thats great and everything but I find I know nothing about monitors (they always came attached! )

What is the price range for a reasonable monitor
I play games (ghost recon, portal, fps mainly)
image editing, I am into photography,
and then I also work at my computer web dev, possibly some video in the future

I'm going for a single monitor. thanks.

for a decent 24" 1080p monitor it's about 150ish, there's alot of personal preference when it comes to monitors personally I like IPS panels because of there colours and viewing angles where as others may prefer TN panels because of there low response times etc etc.
Just aslong as it has DVI or HDMI in and has a response time that's 5ms or below your golden.
