Car Insurance After Coming Home.

    Hi,

Not quite sure if I am posting this in the correct area, admin please move if you want.

Anyway, I've a quick question regarding insurance.

I am moving back from Australia in the next few weeks and will be buying a car on my return.

I have heard of people getting massive quotes for insurance after moving home because of no proof of no claims history. Myself and my girlfriend have shared one car while we have been here and it has been in her name, we haven't any insurance other than the compulsory CTP insurance which does not require me to be a named driver.

I guess my question is, has anyone come back, been in the same boat and had problems getting a reasonable insurance quote?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Owen

If you had insurance in Ireland previously then depending on how long you have been gone you could chance your arm with your last insurer and see what they say. It would also be worth trying some brokers and see what they can swing for you.

But in general you are going to find it hard if you have no NCB to show them.

Were you in Oz over 2 years? Did you have car insurance here before?

It'd be tough to pay out massive money even though I've had no claims over here!! I will get in touch with my old crowd and see what happens. Will post my outcome (if any!!)

If any else has info please let me know....

    @biko

I've been here three years but have been back once a year since and have been insured on the parents car, I wonder would that make any difference?

Yeah I've been insured since I was 18 on my own policy, that would count for something surely?

No claims bonus generally expire after 2 years, but in some cases it will be 3 if you go back to the last place that you were insured with.

Named driver experience often counts, but it would need to be full years experience and not just random weeks/months here and there. Worth mentioning nonetheless if you cant use your own NCB.

I was in the same boat last year. I moved back home after my NCB had expired and suddenly I was starting again as if I was a brand new driver. :(

The cheapest insurance I could find was 25plus.ie, which I think is underwritten by AIG, but people on here seem to suggest that going through a broker is your best bet, which I didn't know when I moved back last year.
