Has anyone tried growing lucerne for silage. If so how did it work out in terms of how many years it grew a good crop for and its nutritional value.

If you are talking about alfalfa, its a wonderful crop, I seen it grown in the US and canada. Afaik its only suitable for free-draining non acidic land so it could be hard to grow in our heavy soils + wet climate

It would be impossible to dry, Italian ryegrass and red clover would be a better crop for here. No need for nitrogen and more bulk than Italian on it's own.

Know 1 guy who grew it. Said it was a great job. Cows eat it before maize. Expensive tho.

Needs too much heat to be of any value in Ireland.
    Excellent feed though.
Highly palatable with 26% protein and good long grain fibre.
Just opened new crop lucerne wraps today and very pleased.

    Does it need much water?

It flys with irrigation. 5 to 6 cuts per annum.

Don't know cubic weight but 4x4 bale from fusion at 44%dm = 720kg.

No. It's the best feed I've ever used. Kicks milkers to another level and is the job for young stock.
Freely trading at that price though.
