Internal News at BA - June 26, 2014

British Airways has announced that it will start flying direct to Dublin from London City Airport. From the start of the winter schedule, October 26, British Airways will launch five-a-day services to Dublin using a mix of Embraer 170 and 190 jets from its new fleet of 17 aircraft.

The Embraer aircraft will be based in Dublin overnight for an early morning departure, allowing customers to do a full day’s business in London or to connect on to British Airways’ 26 domestic, European and international destinations from the Docklands airport. The schedule also allows passengers to do a full day’s business in Dublin.

British Airways is also increasing frequency to Scotland from London City with two new flights a day to Glasgow and an extra daily flight to Edinburgh. The increases means British Airways will fly a total of 11 return flights a day to Edinburgh and eight return flights a day to Glasgow from October, offering the best schedule choice from London City.

Luke Hayhoe, commercial general manager at London City said: “We are constantly looking at how we can improve our schedule and the best ways to use our new aircraft. We are very excited about flying to Dublin, it was what our customers wanted and we are delighted that we can offer such an excellent schedule giving them plenty of choice whether they are flying for business or pleasure.

“We are also able to add to our existing network to Scotland with extra flights on the popular Glasgow and Edinburgh routes, once again improving frequency and schedule.”

The new flights between London City and Dublin extend the choice for customers who are already able to fly from Heathrow to the Irish capital with British Airways up to eight times a day.

Including the new London City flights, British Airways will fly up to a total of 27 times a day between Edinburgh and London and 21 times a day between Glasgow and London.

Thought some of you maybe interested.

So we're going from 1 to 3 operators to LCY now - as FlyBe are coming in also. If I was CityJet/Intro I'd be getting VERY worried right now, particularly as the Ejets are a much nicer plane to fly on than the cramped Avro.

I think we can safely say any yields CityJet were generating on the LCY route have pretty much gone out the window now come October when the route doubles in weekly frequency, it's a case of who leg's it first by next March. To go from 7x Mon-Fri between DUB-LCY with WX to a total of 14x Mon-Fri with WX, BACF and BE is a pretty big jump in terms of the demand that's already there.

Will it not be more than 14x weekly, BA will be 5x a day.

16x whoops, thought flybe was 2x they are actually 4x Mon-Fri!

I could be wrong, but I believe he is stating daily flights.

The average business traveller doesn't know or care if the bird he is flying is 20 years old or fresh out of the box.

They care about who has the best departure times to maximize the day. Will they get breakfast on board, or at least a decent coffee and a newspaper.

    Are all 3 using T1?

Its more the fact that the Avro 3x3 seating is far, far more cramped than the 2x2 in the EJet than the age - of the three the one average people will assume is "old" will be the very new Q400 for BE; however they'll know Cityjet as cramped.

3x2 was the more normal seating layout for 146/RJs when launched.

I think this move may be a deathknell for CityJet as we know it. Their AirFrance owners have been moving reliance on them too.

Business pax do care about flight schedules....but they also care about comfort, punctuality, service onboard, lounge access/quality and frequent flyer programs

Just had a thought - I wonder would they look at an EI codeshare on this / BA code on EI's JFK flights to offer an economy 'equivalent' of BA1/2/3/4? Or the other flights also - which would get ground between them and Odyssey's proposal for LCY-US flights on CSeries.

As someone who flies regularly as an "executive" (I use that term very loosely) if there was similar time and frequency I would pick the BA embraers 10 times out of 10. I'm not a small fella, and if I don't get a seat in the back 3 rows where it's 3x2 on the avros it's miserable being wedged shoulder to shoulder with the fella next to you.

Service is adequate on cityjet, but unless you're up the front it's just a bog standard chewy muffin or sambo and average coffee. From flying BA the odd time it's the same there.

I always liked cityjet as LCY is a dream for the city or CW, but now they're not the only game in town I'll happily lose allegiance.

Their equipment is outdated, and whilst it would be quicker than BE, I have a feeling it will be slower than BA.

Pity as they're a good company, but I think they'll be toast in a year or two

I'd imagine that wouldn't be worth their while. The club lcy product is meant to be guaranteed by a major CW customer. It hasn't been possible to UUA a booking onto it for a couple of years indicating a fare loophole closed to discourage leisure pax.
With so much vested in their own product to the States ex T5,I don't see them marketing EI Tatl especially from the harder to access lcy(tube wise and car wise) for the ordinary passenger who doesn't work nearby.

It really depends how much of a risk they consider Odyssey to both their existing LCY flight and to front cabin traffic from LHR.

I'd imagine they'll offer connections where plausible to AA/US flights under the JV anyway, had forgotten about that.

The BA CF Embraer service from London City is excellent, my airport of choice in London. The only down side is lack of BA lounge at City

Surely that wouldn't matter as a socialist like your good self wouldn't frequent the champagne bar at T5's Galleries F anyway :p
