Anyone know if it's possible to weld a cast iron fireplace. A straight brake about 4 inches long.

It's possible but requires someone with the knowledge and experience to do a successful job as the casting requires pre-heating and the use of special filler rods/ wire and post-heating too, as far as I know.

Depending on where the break is the weld may stand out like a sore thumb if it's in a conspicuous area, e.g. if the welded parts have a textured finish you won't be able to match it and it may contain grinding marks. I think stainless steel or nickel is used and this would have a different appearance to cast iron though it may be possible to weld from behind to minimise the effect.

The trouble with welding cast iron is that it cools too fast and the weld will crack.

Thanks for the replies,I think I might put a steel plate with strong adhesive behind the brake. It might hold it. The fireplace is only used as an ornament anyway. Will let you know how I get on
