i have a friend who was called into fas today.
they are sending her on a 5 week course in a few months.
this course covers basic computing, interview skills, cv preparation among other things.
this course is going to be almost impossible to attend as it is going to clash with collecting her son from school. her husband does not drive.

    has she got any options??

her work before unemployment was retail, cleaning and bar work, 3 part time jobs meant a good degree of flexibility to attend the school run

so why doesnt she get a part time job in retail then

shes collecting jobseekers allowance and fas are helping to prepare her for a job.

if she is not looking for a job or looking for help then she shouldnt collect jobseekers allowance

jesus christ i must suggest that

i had thought on putting up a question for the last few hours and was fearful of doing so because i thought that the goody goody brigade and everyone else are scroungers, would post some silly arsed answer about getting a job.

she is available for and ACTIVELY seeking employment
45 years of age and only out of work for 18 months

could any of the usual helpful members have an answer to the the original question

its about time Ireland adopted the same approach as other E.U countries,6 months on the dole then cut them off unless they show genuine efforts to gain employment.

Couldn't she do a deal with another mum to collect her kid? Or send him to after school? Many people work full time and cope with this. Shes going to have to figure it out. If a fantastic job came along would she turn that down too for the same reason?

tell her to go to the course in the hours she can, go and pick up her child and then present herself back at the course. If she is unemployed she has to show she is available to find work. When she has to get her son, to stand up and leave the course, get her son. Make sure she tells those on the course this is why she is doing it.
Before that tell her to apply for a plc course locally, and or any courses she might be interested in. apply apply apply.. at interviews state the times she is available and why she is not available when she isn't. Something will ten up for her that will work for all.. also let her know there is childcare options she can avail of, circumvention is great, also there is some totally free childcare for fas courses and some plc courses too... google circumvention. She might find she can get after school care heavily discounted.

Tell her to go to the course that fas send her on, but to tell her to leave when she has to .
    Simple.

as for the other poster, don't waste your breath. all the best

    read the post above yours

why does there seem to be this assumption in this country that everyone who is on the dole is happy to be on the dole.

NNNgggg why do all these threads end the same way.. get a grip you sad plebs.. Not everyone on the dole is a scrounger etc etc et feckin cetra.. You have heard it all before so just go back under the bridge your posts are a waste of life!

To the OP, start the course and explain yourself to the head of the course and assure them you can do the work even if you have to leave early to collect your son. And do it.

I could tear this post to shreds with my hands tied behind my back, and blindfolded, but I'm not going to waste my energy.

Why posts like this are allowed to go without consequence, when they are clearly trolling, and the culture on Boards of condescension, passive aggression and the support of it by inaction really bugs the life out of me.

Anyway, OP, sorry to take things off topic but I'm sick to death of these kinds of posts. I hope you get a helpful response for your friend.

    Im not trolling

I understand people dont want to be on the dole

Fas are making an effort to send the lady a course. get her trained up.

Its up to her to make an effort to make it work.

if she cant make arrangements then she needs to contact fas and tell them.

If you weren't trolling then maybe you could, in future, think before you speak to someone. Your post was littered with baseless assumptions which would rub any relatively sane person up the wrong way. Anyway it's not your post, it's an entire thriving online culture.

What would happen if you were in a full time work regarding collecting the child?

obviously missed the bit about 3 part time jobs, these were all at the same time

husband worked in construction and worked away from home for quite a while.
built up a bit of a nest egg and refused to sign on the dole until they could do no better.
i am talking about genuine victims of the current economic climate, but, some folk on here dont believe that these people exist

i am off to bed as i HAVE work in the morning

    Available for work
The Department of Social Protection’s Operational Guidelines state that you are considered available for employment, if:

You state that you are available for work
You do all that is asked to show compliance with this availability condition
There is no evidence to suggest the contrary
Essentially the Department of Social Protection considers that you are available for employment if you are prepared to accept any offers of suitable employment immediately.

However you can be regarded as not being available for work and therefore not entitled to Jobseeker's Allowance if you put unreasonable restrictions on the following:

    The nature of the employment
    The hours of work
    The rate of pay
    The duration of the employment
    The location of the employment
If a Deciding Officer thinks that that you have placed unreasonable restrictions, you will be interviewed and given the opportunity to respond. Note that if you refuse a suitable offer of work you can be disqualified from Jobseeker’s Allowance. If you are looking after a sick or elderly person you may be entitled to Carer's Allowance...

Information here regarding absences from Fás courses. It is possible that money will be deducted in respect of undocumented time absent and absence record may also affect exam results. http://www.fas.ie/en/Learners/Responsibiliites/Absence/default.htm

If the person was being paid for full time employment they could probably pay for chilldcare arrangements.
